Interesting, thanks for explaining. I hated those things because they obscured the real cover, so I had to discard the plastic wrap to be able to see the whole cover.

They also get in the way if you are trying to open a gateway cover. As someone who is more intersted in the contents than the physical media or packaging itself. I also consider them more of a nuisance than anything else. But the  are evidently important to collectors. I personally could care less and am all to happy to pay a cheaper price for a Japanese import that is missing the OBI.  8)

I am of the opinion that Count Basie was a little overproduced after his Decca and Columbia periods.  I don't think the music he was recording in the 1950s for Roulette and Verve has the fire and spontineity of the material he did with Lester Young in the late 1930s and early 1940s.  But then, that is really the big difference between early and later Basie -- the Pres.  It isn't as though I don't like the later stuff.  April in Paris is a fine album to be sure, as are other early recordings for Verve.  I find the Roulette material a little less compelling, but still enjoyable.  Basie would start a decline in the 1960s with a lot of forgettable recordings but would find a calling again in the twilight of his career on Pablo, again with Norman Granz.

One of my favorite jazz pianists.  A West-coaster who's playing never strayed too far from the East.

I have two Basie LPs, April in Paris and Basie at Birdland. I bought April only because I liked Birdland so much, and wanted more, but it was a disappointment. Basie at Birdland is one of my most beloved records.   But April In Paris sold a LOT of records, it was a pretty big hit.

Tchaikovsky: Piano Concerto No. 1 - Rubinstein/Leinsdorf/Boston Symphony

The SQ in this LP was not up to the standards I have come to expect from the RCA LSC series. The orchestral image seemed kind of compressed inspace and somewhat congested. I know that many people have talked down about the Dynagroove pressings in terms of SQ so I am not sure if it is the pressing that is causing the problem of if the congestion is part of the original recording itself. Does anyone out there have a CD pressing of this recording (it was done in 1963) and if so does the CD exhibit the same kind of image congestion?

Arlo Guthrie: Alice's Restaurant

CD

Is it Thanksgiving?  Alice's Restaurant gets an annual spin in our house on Turkey Day.  Side one is classic.  Side two, is well, filler.
