Outstanding performance and an audiophile recording.  Grab a copy if you can.

Very wide dynamic range on this recording.

If I could recommend only one Brahms Piano Concerto No. 1 recording this would be it.  While I do not think that Katchen matches the fire and intensity or hits the emotional peaks and valleys that Rubinstein managed with Fritz Reiner, it comes damn close.  And the sound on this London ffss vinyl pressing is more spacious and three dimensional than the RCA Victor shaded dog pressing of the Rubinstein recording.

I haven't spun this record in a while.  Excellent performance and recording...though the sonics of the Curzon recording on London are a little better.

Jeez, here's a recording I didn't know that Rubinstein did.  Liszt Piano Concerto No. 1 with Antal Dorati and the Dallas Symphony Orchestra in 1947.  What a fine recording!

Eugene Ormandy and the Philadelphia Orchestra deliver a smokin' hot reading of Liszt's Hungarian Rhapsody No. 2 (and the young lady on the album cover ain't too shabby either.  aa )

Sometimes spending a lot of money on audiophile records doesn't get you very far.  A few years ago I bought this title on a Cisco 180g vinyl reissue from Acoustic Sounds for $39.  It sat unplayed for a few months before I had time to give it a listen.  The record was loaded with loud pops on both sides.  In short it was a bad pressing.  It was past the 30 return window so I was stuck with it.

A few weeks ago I found this original minty Columbia 2 Eye pressing for $7.  The sound is awesome and no pops.

Modern big band arrangements, audiophile sound quality, top players. Holman was Kenton's most famous and prolific arranger.
