They began as the Thad Jones-Mel Lewis Orchestra, with Thad on coronet and composing most of the tunes, and Mel, rock steady, carrying the beat so the band can swing. Mel always left the solos to the players, it was his way.
When Mel passed away in 1990, the Orchestra continued on without him. Their sound changed a bit, they now seem to take less risks, but they are still as tight as ever. If you enjoy swinging hot big band, check out this recording on NPR.
