Pink Floyd

Palais des Sports de L'Ile de la Jatte, Saint Ouen, France
1 December 1972

01 On The Run (incomplete)
02 Time
03 Breathe (Reprise)
04 The Great Gig In The Sky
05 Money
06 Us And Them
07 Any Colour You Like (cuts)
08 Any Colour You Like (in full)
09 Brain Damage
10 Eclipse
11 One Of These Days
12 RTL presenter
13 Careful With That Axe, Eugene
14 BlueS (cuts)
15 Blues (in full)
16 Echoes
17 Childhood's End

Total running time 97m 38s

AM > Cass(1) > DAT(1) > WAV (16-bit/48kHz) > FLAC

This is a 1st gen 48kHz recording of the RTL Radio broadcast from 2 December 1972. Like other sources from this date it
does not feature Speak to Me or Breathe.

The correct running time of the concert is about 90 minutes. My DAT has about 8 minutes of duplicated music with 4 in 15
secs repeated during Any Colour You Like and another 3 mins 40 secs minutes during Blues. Somebody might like to edit the
extra music out but I decided it was best to avoid the temptation.

I normalized the WAV but no other processing has been applied.

For those of us that don't speak digital, what do the following anacronyms stand for (and what does it mean)?
"SBD > CDR > ? > SHN > TLH > FLAC > TLH (fixed SBEs) > FLAC"
I think that Flac is some sort of digital file.  CDR?  Recordable compact disc? The rest I have no clue.

Excellent question @ S Clark. At its heart, the information is meant to indicate the source of the recording. There is also a transfer process, which itself has similar information. You could view that type of information in my Grateful Dead post January 28, 2023, 12:39:48 PM.

But this information you've quoted from my most recent post in this thread is strictly "source of the recording" information.

The "SBD" means it's a soundboard recording. The ">" means the next step in the chain. The "CDR" means Compact Disk Media. The "SHN" means shorten. Shorten is a type of lossless compression (and a file format of its own, albeit it cannot be played without having to decompress it). The "TLH" means the files were parsed through the traders little helper program to check for errors. And, the FLAC means "Free Lossless Audio Codec format" which traders litttle helper converted the SHN file into. The reason for that conversion is that the shorten format cannot accommodate file attributes, such as album art, whereas the FLAC format can. The "TLH (fixed SBEs) " means traders little helper was used yet again to fix sector boundary errors. Sector Boundary Errors can occur when an audio cdr is burned. If the original files aren't cut in just the right place, then you'll get an unwanted transition between where one track ends and the next track begins (and the potential for noise/pops: http://wiki.etree.org/index.php?page=SectorBoundaryDiscussion )

And yes, FLAC is a digital file. It is a lossless compressed file, the defacto standard for streaming and file distribution. But, unfortunately not the optimum/best for playback. Another note is that SHN can only be used in the case of 16/44.1 file sets, as SHN does not support any kind of high resolution.

I hope this answers your question. If not, by all means, continue to pose additional questions. I am happy to answer them.  :)

It's not really an analog versus digital thing. Digital is way simpler. You asked the question, hence I answered it. The good part about digital is you don't need to know all that stuff all you need to do is have the file and play it. You don't have to care about the source of the recording, or the transfer of the recording, or anything else. The only concern you have is how good does it sound to you.  :thumb:

Now if you prefer analog for other reasons that too can be valid. But even in the analog domain whether you're talking about vinyl or whether you're talking about magnetic tape the same questions can be raised as to the source of the music and how it ultimately made its way onto the vinyl or ultimately made its way onto the  tape. For instance if it's a live or studio recording, even if you're listening to it in an analog format, say on LPS or as you state vinyl,  you might want to know what microphone was used, etc. 8)

I've heard some amazing digital- even in my own room!  Our HAL (Rich) sent his first prototype music server to me to try and review close to a decade ago...
And I agree that Digital is probably simpler, if you know your way around basic computer stuff.    I don't, and for me vinyl is simpler.  Setting up a cartridge is 15-30 minutes.  Trying to figure out why a dac won't connect to a computer is like being lost in the woods at night.

Oh gosh yes, which pressing plant? first pressing or? which cutting? who did the cutting? Analog is far from simple...
