Title: how do I get my old handle back?
Post by: TopRound‎ on November 20, 2022, 02:06:18 PM
Tried to log in as topround, my old username, but to no avail. Tech vexes me sometimes!
I am now toopround, which is more silly than topround.
I want topround back, can the digital deities helpme?

Danke

Hello. I'm no digital deity, but I am a computer science major, and have been involved with data processing in some form or another for 40 plus years, so I suppose I know something.

I have logged off of this site and then, obviously, logged back on in order to reply. The only "forgotten" type of option on the login page of this site involves ones password, not username. Some sites have options for a forgotten username.

If you're sure (I imagine you are) that the username "topround" belongs to you, enter that in the username field and then use the forgot password link. Presumably an email with appropriate instructions are then sent to the email address you used when that username was initialized.

It is also conceivable, though unlikely, that this site is experiencing a programmatic and/or database error. However, given that you have now reregistered, albeit with a different username, a site admin should be able to merge your two accounts, delete one or the other, or take no action.

Best.

Hal

Hey "Too Proud" ... what's wrong with your new moniker? I kind of like it.

I did a little trickery. Your username is not the old one but now your display name is what you want.

@Folsom

Your solution is akin to "spoofing". I see you have the wherewithal to achieve that on this site. Would you not then have the capability to resolve the issue in a more technically sound and accurate way, which is to merge toopround to topround?  Example advantage of doing so is total number of post counts. I assure you I'm not wanting to be argumentative. Instead, l'm looking to learn as you may have underlying compelling logic for choosing the course of action you took. Thank you.

It's readily available in the menus. Merging involves a bit more that maybe I'll dig into at another time.
