Amp Camp Amp?
« on: May 02, 2021, 02:02:21 PM »
Howdy,
As mentioned in one of my threads threatening to wield my soldering iron- Iím looking to dive in and make something.
I came upon this and wonder if anyone has heard about it, or can take a look and see if it seems an appropriate first time project. It can be built as a stereo amp or monoblock. Iíd be doing it as a stereo amp, at 8 watts per channel.

Let me know what you think.
Jim
PS- Iím not concerned about the power; my speakers are fairly efficient. Iím also not under any illusions about replacing my integrated- Iím just looking for a beginnerís project.

Jim,
That looks like a fun project, especially since itís a kit by Nelson Pass. I had heard about it before. Assuming you can hone your soldering skills, would you be able to test it to make sure it works? I think I could learn to solder again, but testingÖ. I kinda doubt it.

I was hired to assemble two ACA 1.8s about 3 weeks ago. Customer was going to run each stereo chassis as parallel or bridge configuration. Not a beginner's project as instructions not Heathkit quality but more general with some photos.

cheers

Steve- Iím looking at the Heathkit site. I had no idea they were still in existence. Thanks. Truthfully, Iím looking for things to hone my non-existent skills, so Iím sure anything will do. An egg timer, Tice clock, etc...

I saw this and am tempted to have a go at it as well. So very cheap.

Steve Guttenberg (The Audiophiliac) did a nice comparison with the Schiit and First Watt amps.

Yes- as much as I would love to do an Audio Note kit, I need to play in the sandbox first. My best analogy would be driving and crashing your first car... Better a Ď65 Belvedere (in my case) than a Porsche. BTW, I didnít crash the Belvedere- it died of natural causes.
