.....Nothing swings like the original popular radio swing, those boys were swinging for profit, and they perfected it.

Dick Hyman: From the Age of Swing

Here is a perfect example. It is a Keith Johnson Reference Recordings release so you know the sonics are top shelf, the music is played very well, but it just doesn't have that "magic" they was in the original 40s big band recordings. Don't get me wrong, it's a good album and I enjoy listening to it, but it's just not the same.

Some good hard edge modern string quartet music. Dissonent, aggressive, moody. Sharp clear strings whining and screeching. Still on the plantation though, with real harmony, tempo, and playing together as a group... iow, real music.

Ladies and Gentlemen.... The Grateful Dead - Filmore East New York City, April 1971

I am reading a book called "You Can't Always Get What You Want" by Sam Cutler who was the tour manager for the Rolling Stones and the Grateful Dead in the early 70s, so I thought I would have to listen to one of the shows that they did during the timeframe that the book is discussing.

One of the interesting thing that came out of the book is that the Dead did not take to the road because they loved to tour so much but rather because they were almost bankrupt and need to play that many concerts to get out of their financial hole.
