Room temperature and timbre variations?
« on: September 10, 2007, 03:59:56 PM »
Anyone notice any sonic changes with room temperature variation?

For me, if I let the room temp rise more than about 2 degrees above 72, the sound starts to thin and down two degrees and the sound starts to fill out.

No shit!  Kidding aside I notice when its a bit warm and humid the sound tends to thin out. Don't know why it happens. Hey bpape can shed some light.

Guess I am not certifiable, yet.

I would guess the compliances might be different for different drivers. IF that were true, then the maggies might not show any differences with temp.

I can say that my Maggies [3A] never showed any sign of being affected by temp or humidity change. I believe it might be just the weight of the air being pushed around by the drivers that is making us hear a difference. Could it be that when its humid the air is heavier? Drier less resistance and a brighter sound. Only guessing but it sounds good.

Rollo saved you just in time... hehehe    But it is an interesting observation...

Wintor or summer I am shivering at 70F so my shaking ears definitely "affects" the sound. hehe   I am happier when it's warm, so I enjoy the music more then too, I guess.

Damn! now in addition to listening to tubes, wires and reflections I can 'listen' to the air temperature too. Thanks steve - thanks a lot.

YYoooooooouuuuuuuuuurrrrrrrrrrrrrrr welcome Rich.   :)

Seriously, sorry about that. But room temperature is a consideration. 72 is optimum.

I just noticed I went from 'seeking help' to 'certifiable'. :-P

Now that the humidity is low during these Fall months for some reason my CDP sounds better. Got me man. Could it just be less AC is being used on the grid [ No air cond.] This clean crisp air of Fall seems to improve the sound.
Anyone have a clue as to why?

My system doesn't seem to care much about temperature. It does have a mind of it's own though. It's a night owl. Decides to sound a bit better after dark.
