Title: $50,000 to spend
Post by: rollo on November 12, 2007, 07:28:58 AM
So you have $50,000 to spend on audio. What would you do with the money?

Great question!  I'm going to have to ponder that - this isn't the class I play in.  Right now I'm thinking the first step would be a trip to probably Chicago or NYC - somewhere with lots of boutiques.  I really would want to hear some of this stuff before plunking down the $.

Whole new system?  One big piece?  Amp/pre combo?  Ooo, I could get the top-end Lamm SET amp and pre!

Put it in the bank toward the music room in the new house...

I have to agree... I stopped spending money on gear a year or so ago to start saving for the basement... and it'll be the end of the year before I can even get to phase 1.

rollo, are you writing us into your will? ;)

How about 8 weeks of audio rehab? then spend the rest on a small sailboat.

I like AR/Wilson combo. But I don't think $50k would cover it.  :duh

Okay, what would I want:

1.  Source:

A.  Bolder Statement Level S3 ------------------- $1300.00
B.  Bolder Latest top of the line Power Supply ----- $1500.00
C.  Bolder's top of the line DC Cable ---------------$  300.00
D.  Bolder Modded Burson Buffer ------------------ $  800.00
D.  Two Black Sand Statement PCs---------------- $ 2200.00

2.  Amps --Bella Extreme Hurricanes -------------- $10,000.00

3.  Preamp - Gary Dodd Battery Preamp ----------- $  3,300.00

4.  Speakers - Not certain but would listen to many.
     I will allow:   -----                                          $20,000.00

5.  PCs --- Black Sands Statements for amps-------- $ 2,200.00

6.  ICs and SCs --- JPS --------------------------- $  8,000.00

                                       Grand Total ---------- $49,600.00

I bet the above system would really produce excellent sound but I will never own it.  I am surprised how much top level PCs, ICs, and SCs add to the cost of a system.

Richadoo,
Hey man just a regular guy not the " Donald ". If I was no problema . Anyway some good responses so far.
Ok for me it would be a new dedicated listening room. I lust for high clgs. for the Pipedreams. Room approx. 16'w.x 24'd.x10'h. or whatever the Golden Ratio would be. wood floors Adobe walls and clg. Built in subs in the rear wall. Clg. to be angled up from front to rear wall.

Rollo:

Having watched closely and participated in this hobby for several months I think there is great joy in listening to the music and possibly more excitement in hearing that next new piece of gear.  Carl certianly named this site correctly - Audio Nervosa!!!  I believe there will always be a new piece of gear to want or a new system to build.  Like fishing, you always want to catch the next fish!

If it was fully disposable I would like to use some of it for travel expenses so I and my wife could audition expensive heavy loudspeakers. There may be a few speakers based on true ribbons which I might find interesting. I could also pay a master cabinet maker to build cabinets for a DIY design pair of loudspeakers.
The other items of interest to audition are cutting edge digital sources. A relative small amount of the money could be effectively spent on tickets to live music events featuring acoustic music, what a concept.
My wife would welcome a 60in. 1080p LCD TV monitor to watch movies on.

Outstanding thoughts Scotty!

A bit of $$$ to travel around, enjoy life, and get to audition what is to be had is an excellent appropriation of money.

Hey...Carl...how is the new house coming along??

Slower than I expected... :( Work keeps getting in the way for my wife and I... Which is good for income, bad for time.  When I get some plans drawn for the basement, I'll start a new thread for it... and document the progress.  The budget for the whole basement isn't far off from 50,k... It's amazing how fast the dollars get eaten up...

cheers ww
