Title: New Toy
Post by: bacobits on November 13, 2008, 06:54:24 PM
I've been bored this week. Hell it's been depressing!!! I watch way too much CNN and Fox.
Sunday I put my Denon 1650AR and Benchmark DAC1 out on Agon.
Damn If they both didn't sell the next day. In fact I must have gotten 6 replies each.

New /used CD coming in is a tooobed Cary 308T. Older CD but got some good reviews.
We shall see.

Not to stray off topic but there is this CDP from China I keep reading about that looks quite interesting. Mostly because you can pick it up used (when you can find one) for like 500-600 bucks. New its like 1300 though. Trying to remember the brand the model was like the 5E or something.

Ah here it is!

http://6moons.com/audioreviews/eastsound/eastsound.html

Has a lot of mods out there for it as well. I don't know I've been looking at the new CDP from Emotiva as it uses the AD1955 DAC and only costs 399. But this E-5 looks mighty nice :)

Ya, there is one on Agon right now 7/10 condition. I saw that.

Hell, right now there are 605 players on there. Surely no need to buy new.
Nobody's happy I guess.

Marantz is one of the few now making CD/SACD only machines. All of Denon's line is shrunk and are all combo machines.
In my situation I did not want, music servers, Blue Ray, don't want DVD/A etc., didn't care about SACD since it is mostly dead and from when I had my XA777ES was not drastically better than good Red Book. So I went fishing again.

The Chinese are making some nice machines for the $$$. I had an EE Mini Max Cd too and it was very good.
EE being in a much different category as far as backup to most of the other Chinese manufacturers.

There are a lot, (too many) of choices out there.

I'm looking to get a certain feeling from digital that I had in the past and lost due to selling. Dumb! Can't leave well enough alone can we?
Doing this without replacing the same 2 pieces I sold. I was also looking at NOS DAC's to replace the Benchmark.
The Benchmark is excellent but was not giving me what I lost. I have to be emotionally moved when listening to digital
that goose bump factor, that PRAT, that can't sit still feeling.

Top contenders I was looking at:
Cary 308T
Arcam  FMJ CD23T
Rega Saturn, or Apollo
Cambridge Audio Azur 840
Moon Audio Eclipse
Sony XA9000ES and XA7000ES
Raysonic 128
Marantz 8001
Jolida JD100
Lector 0.6
Audio Aero Prima
All these machines can be had between $950 and $1200 easily.
I would have had the Lector back in March but the guy never called me back for over a week.

I'll comment more later.

The 308T is due in today. If you read my rant on the price of NOS tube prices I happened to pick up
on EBay last night 2 NOS Amperex 7316, Halo's. $70 is pretty reasonable I guess from what I have found in my searches.
Apparently this 7316 is getting pretty rare. I have seen dealer prices at $100 -$250 per tube.
The NOS 12AU7 series have to be some of the most expensive out there in the small tube category.
The 7316 is supposed to be one of the best tube for the 308T.

More to come.

Ahhhhhhh the 308T arrived DOA.
As I have read problems with the Phillips CDM12 transport. It really is junk. Nice player bad transport.
Back to the beginning again. What to get??

Looking at Raysonic 128 (Sony Transport)
Lector .06 ( Phillips CDM12 Trans)

Any Ideas?

 Hook up a wireless or wired mouse. Those track pads are only for travel.

OK, How's about a Raysonic 128? Will be on the way.
NO drawer to futz up! Sony transport.
Maybe I should get out of digital?
Can't with a1000 CDs.

You can never have too many tubes, I think.

Den,

I've got the Raysonic 168, and it sounds GREAT...I don't think you can go wrong with the 128, either.

That was yours we heard at the G2G at Richie's?
Correct? I liked what I heard. The Altmann is too smooth for my taste. That is why I didn't go after a separate NOS DAC.
Both machines got really good reviews. Underwood Wally has an upgrade ($450) to the 128 that supposed to make it better than the 168. I don't like expensive mods at all.

YUP!

He's also got some for the 168...but at about a $1500 price-tag .

I'm on a spending ban...at least until the economy rebounds...so no changes for a long time.

Here too. I just use turnaround money on this stuff.
I've got a real problem now.
My wife just got laid off (Wed) from Hanes who brought us down here in June of 2007. My jaw dropped to the floor.
May be making a move again and I don't want too. We like it here very much.
I would have to sell the house again (no mortgage).
So no foreclosure problems. Man there are a lot of people having problems out there.

2008 is really been a shit year and 2009 may be worse.

Sorry to get off subject.

New toy in, and hey, it friggin works!!!!!!!!!! It was packed beautifully.
The Raysonic 128 came in yesterday and is sounding real smooth.
No wonders it is smooth it is a Burr Brown PCM 1732 with integrated HDCD introduced in 1999.
Hey, we're going backwards here or has digital really improved? I run it at 44.1 and it sounds great.
It really is a nice sounding player and the build is pretty cool too. Better than the Cary.
Being a Top loader it's like putting on a piece of vinyl with the clamp.

I have heard so many variations of digital the last few months I don't know what is accurate.
Or are we going for accuracy? I think not, we are going for personal taste most of all and then what sounds natural but not necessarily accurate. I have not heard a really bad piece of equipment in over 2 years and that was a Sophia baby and a POS EL34 version.

I'm through futzing with digital now for awhile.

The Raysonic 128 is worth a look especially at 1/2 the price of retail and in mint condition as this one is.
I don't think it was played much.

Enjoying it.
