GDHAL, thanks for sending those files.  It took every bit of 5-10 seconds to determine that, for me, the live recording values didn't compare well to studio quality.  And it's not just the gear, as I can compare to some HD Tracks stuff using the same dac, etc.
I focused on three songs that I knew especially well, listening to each twice.
I found vocals and drums soft, image precision unfocused, and of course, crowd noise ubiquitous.  However, you can say that there may be an excitement to the live performance that may not be there in studio recordings.
But we like what we like, and thankfully there is enough good music for all.   :thumb:

Fair enough. And, you're welcome.  :)

Edit: keep in mind that is an audience recording I have plenty of soundboard recordings of Sting, perhaps should be interested in something like that.

It was very generous of you, and truly appreciated.

Wait,  this was taken from someone in the audience?  Like those old guys that used to smuggle 3M reel to reels into operas and club dates???  What kind of recording gear is commonly used?  Is any of it licensed?

Yes, Scott. I distributed the notes file with the music which read (among other data)

(TapeTyrant Master Series Volume 28)

Recording: NAK 300's > Sony TC-D5

Transfer: Master Cassette > Nakamichi DR-01 (azimuth adjusted) > Sound Devices USBPre2 > iZotope RX 8 / ozone 9 (mastered) > xACT 2.50 > FLAC

mjk5510 NOTES:
--Known Faults:  "Demolition Man": start slightly cut
--Welcome to Volume 28 of our master series featuring the master recordings of dime member "tapetyrant". The series will predominately feature captures in the Northeast and Southern California areas. We will touch on multiple genres with a strong focus on Jazz Fusion, New Wave and Rock.
--Tapetyrant was an active taper in the 1980's and much of the 1990's before, like many of us, hanging up the mics. What he captured during that time is uniformly excellent quality and his master tapes have been safely stored, the first batch are in pristine condition. Some shows may circulate from lower generation copies but most have remained uncirculated until now and have never circulated directly from the masters.
--Prior to DAT, the heavy lifting was entirely done by a Sony D5 with NAK 300's and taping was serious business, acquiring the best seats possible and working to keep neighbors in check.
--Volume 28 features one of the early performances of Sting kicking off his solo career. This is the third of three nights at The Ritz and it's a beautiful capture.
--Previous releases for this show include another D5 capture that misses "Roxanne" and "Shadows In the Rain" appears to be joined in progress. As well as a 2nd Generation tape transfer that is likely this capture. This torrent edition has been azimuth adjusted, pitch adjusted and (re)mastered for maximum quality.
--For the most part the audience is manageable around tapetyrant, except maybe the young ladies begging Sting to play "I Burn For You", good news is as I do with all my releases any external interfering audience noise has been removed where possible including much of the "I Burn For You" ladies.
--Thanks as always to goody for the pitch confirmation/adjustments these shows would not be half as good without him and of course continued thanks to "tapetyrant" for doing such a great job capturing these important shows, for reaching out and entrusting me to present his excellent work for all to enjoy for decades to come.
--We are indebted to his generosity (tapers don't let those tapes and your hard work get lost to the ages, there are plenty of folks to get in touch with here to help get them out, we're all working to leave no tape behind).
--Artwork and samples included.

mjk5510 and tapetyrant

vanillag NOTES (9/28/2022):
--Super HUGE Thanks to TapeTyrant for recording & sharing this Sting 1985 "secret" gig show & to mjk5510 for the transfer & share & to goody for his part in the pitch process.  More fine work all around & Absolutely appreciated!!
--Sting played three "secret" gigs at New York's Ritz on 1985-02-25, 1985-02-26 & 1985-02-27.
--the Police had played here before on 1981-01-11.
--After these three Ritz shows Sting flew to Barbados to spend five weeks recording.
--Sting did not play bass on this tour
--I corrected some of the song titles toward how they appear on the original albums
--added the band members info
--added some more detail to the setlist
--added the ffp fingerprints to the text file
--added more info to the venue

See here's the rub. If you like studio recordings, fine. Now how many times can/will you listen to the same recording? Live music is just that, live, which means it is going to be "different" than any other the time the same artist performs the same song.  8) :thumb:

@ S Clark I just sent you a PM with a download link for

Sting with Jerry Garcia -
1993-06-26 - RFK Stadium - Washington, DC

it is a soundboard master

Sting was the opener for The Grateful Dead. This was recorded by a member of the GD lighting crew. A nice full soundboard direct recording. Jerry Garcia sits in toward the end of Sting's set.

If this recording doesn't have you convinced (as far as studio vs live recordings) then there's nothing left to do but  :) :) :)
