Title: Are you Obsessed?
Post by: mresseguie on April 06, 2018, 06:41:29 PM
Well, it seems I'm going to become even more Obsessed with this audio addiction.

I've decided to try out a TWL Obsession PC in my system. I'm looking forward to pairing it to my D Sachs Model 2 preamp, my D Sachs Kootenay 120, and my Mivera IceEdge 1200as amp. It'll be about 6 weeks before I have it because I'm wandering around East Asia again and won't return the the beautiful PNW (That's not Papua New Winnie!) until mid-May. I'll let you know how it sounds.

Special thanks to someone named Dave for steering me in the right direction.

That will be an interesting comparison, Michael....the Sachs tube amp vs the Mivera amp. I’ve been following the posts on Mike’s amp over at AC and will be curious as to your impressions. I think PNW
is in the Seattle area, right??

Hi, Nick.

I've already got a loaner Takachi with basic internal wiring. I'm in the process of writing up a review of it. Teaser: It's pretty impressive.

However, I won't be able to compare it to my Kootenay until my return.

PNW includes Oregon, Washington, British Columbia, and I'm told, western Idaho.

I tell ya lots of claims and hype from Mivera. Maybe its me but I just cannot fathom a that a Hypex based amp can outperform the Don Sachs.
Hypex sound to me was always threadbare and hard or bright. 2D imaging great bass though. I found that once I got over the impressive dynamics the sound was just Hi Fi compared to many other designs.
I find this Amp to be the hype of the day, priced low and maybe falsely advertised. I will be quite surprised if after time spent with Mivera the Hi Fi sound will be the end result.
In all fairness to Mivera I need to try one against my reference class "D" amp. The tubed ones as well. We shall find out. Hey please do not misunderstand me. We all would like a new design that is inexpensive and sounds like music not Hi fi so until heard they will get benefit of doubt.

I’ve been following all the Mivera threads over at AC and was tempted a bit to try the amp with the less expensive case. But as it appears there’s no return policy, I didn’t pursue it.
I am curious about what he comes up with regarding cables, but iirc, that thread was quarantined.
Charles, if you get one, I’d be real curious to hear your impressions.

I am not doubting Michaels excitement or hearing ability with the Mivera. However been down this road with numerous class "D" amps.
The original Hypex module was not my cup of tea. Dry, lean, hard and bright. Crown anybody ? Nick I not be getting one to try. The Arion HS 500 is the Class "D" to beat in my experience. You name the brand and the Arion won out every time. Beat Pass as well all day long.

Charles, as you’re not going to hear one, I’ll just have to wait for Michael’s opinion. I’ll be especially curious as the comparison will be against Don Sachs tube amp

I’d forgotten about this thread. Too much has been going on in my life.

I did post a two-part listening impressions postabout the Mivera amp on AC and commented in another thread here.

It’s a good amp - really good.

I’ve got a loaner Takachi case amp with the most basic internal wiring and connections that Mike offered. I would have preferred upgraded internals, but since this was a loaner (at no extra cost to me), I ain’t complaining.

Would you like me to ask Mike if he’d consider offering this amp as a tour item? I have no idea if he’d be willing to do it. It’s got about 600 hours burn-in, I guess.

Anyway, the good news is I just ordered a 6-foot Obsession from Pete. [Thanks, Pete!] I also allowed him to persuade me to take a couple demo 7+ PCs off his hands. I should probably be committed. I really don’t have great PCs in the States because I brought my TWL loom over here.

Michael,
If others here are interested, then I’d be curious to hear it as well. The problem is the price.  Mike put a lot of effort....and expense..... into the quality of the case, the etching for the lettering etc.

Nick,

The Takachi case is absolutely Plain Jane. There are no upgrades whatsoever and it’s list price is $900.

Since Mike announced he’ll no longer sell amps after the next batch, I will wager he’d let this go at a discount. I don’t mind admitting to being mystified by his decision to stop selling amps. Perhaps it’s a strategy to enable him to concentrate on creating DACs and the integrated amp he’s mentioned. I dunno.

Anyone else interested in a possible tour? I still have not asked Mike about the idea.

Michael,
I believe the Takachi case unit does not have upgraded internal wiring, better caps, better power supply as well. Isn’t that another of the differences? I really doubt it would best my upgraded McCormack DNA 1.0, but maybe it would.

Nick,

I don’t know how it compares to your McCormack amp. I’ve never heard one nor even seen one before.

As for upgrading the Takachi, Doug is correct. The caps are a permanent part of the 1200as module. The only improvements that can be made are a heavier case, connectors, internal wiring, and power cord - and bypassing the iec socket’s fuse. Oh, and you can buy expensive fuses, but I have no experience with these.  I think that’s it.

According to the https://www.miveraaudio.com/forum/flash-sale-thread/farewell-to-the-power-amplifier-flash-sale you will no longer be able to get the amplifiers in the question after he sells the last 10.

Correct. You will no longer be able to buy amps made by Mivera. However, there are currently four businesses assembling and selling 1200as based amplifiers. They are Bellissimo (USA), Nord (England), Rogue (Italy), and I’ve forgotten the fourth.

I have one, it is awesome. Better in every way than any other amp I have ever heard, and it can dump 1400wpc into my 2.9ohm Legacys. Yes, better than mdconnelly's previous stock McCormack DNA500 which had softer bass and more laid back feel overall. Better than NuForce Reference 9SE, better than Spectron Musician, better than Cherry, better than NCore 400. An amp with similar SQ is Levinson 532, authoritative and clear, but relaxed. Mine has rhodium/copper Foofootech connectors, no switch, no extra fuse, Takaka case, not minerva. It has a similar wide open and present sound as my old Snapper tube amps, but better bass, unlimited power, but not quote as much of an attention hog as Snapper. The tone seems perfect on every instrument, double reeds, solo strings, harmon trumpet, fender bass, concert bass drum. Unlimited detail and texture, as much as your DAC and speakers can make. If you always push for the best you can achieve then this amp will challenge the rest of your system mightily. I have some JPS XLR ICs coming today because my old DIY Gotham/Neutriks bottlenecked this amp. The amp is always on, 13W in standby, never gets hot no matter how long I blast it with dance music or organ music. It doesn't have any personality really, truthful, relaxed, confident, capable. It does not grab your attention, it has no color, it is not violent and scary like some class Ds, it feels relaxed. Your speakers will finally behave themselves and do what they're told no matter how difficult the chore. I am still trying to get rid of the feeling that something is about to blow up if I keep playing it this loud - an ingrained anxiety from too many years playing a poor audiophile!

It's not worth the effort to mass produce them for $1k. Anyone can buy a small batch of boards from B&O if you say you are a mfg. Then you buy the cases and connectors, build a batch for yourself and your friends. Most serious audiophiles can would pony up $1k for an amp as good as this. Don't need a fancy case, or a warranty, or fuses or foofootech. It's great enough just by itself. All the goodness is in the ICEedge chips.

Don’t hold back, Rich. Would you say you like this amp?

What has it got for the internal PC or does it have a dedicated PC?

Title: Re: Are you Obsessed?

Well, that’s high praise indeed. I heard Gary’s Pass Aleph 30 watt stereo amp recently and it was quite good. A richer sound than my McCormack. And I have an offer for a trade for monos for the McCormack. But i really dont want more devices and power cords than i need. It would also be great to get another amp and make a profit on the deal. I was also thinking about the Arion 250 watt stereo amp that Charles really likes.
So I’d like to hear that Mivera, but looks like no interest for a mini tour so far.

Yeah, I like it. :D

The amplifier board has a built in switching power supply. The amp is dead silent on my 92dB speakers, and it weighs like 12 pounds in the case.

Class A is fun, but it's too colored for me. I find it hard to ignore the sound of it.

The only "coloration" of this amp if you can call it that is the dynamics are more pronounced than what I'm used to, because there is no shortage of current to move the drivers all the way out. So it's a more confident authoritative sound, typical of any high powered amp. But they don't usually have pristine high frequency like the ICEedge does, at least not for $1k.

Michael,

I have a TWL Obsession (all NCF connectors) going from a Furutech GTX NCF wall outlet into Dave's latest upgraded PI UberBuss with Furutech NCF IEC inlet and 3 GTX NCF duplex outlets. From there I use TWL 7+ PC's to 2 stereo ICE 1200AS2's identical to what Rich has (no, NOT Mivera), in Takachi cases with all Furutech connectors. These 2 amps drive a pair of JBL M2's, bi-amped with active XO. I also have a PS Audio BHK preamp and PS Audio DirectStream DAC, with TWL 12 and TWL Digital American PC's respectively.

It does take a while for all that NCF and Uber magic sauce to settle down, but yes, it all sounds very purdy  8)

Welcome to the world of NCF rhodium.  It is a lot like climbing to the top of Mount Hood.  It takes a while, you need to weather the storms and then you have to go back down.  Takes a while, for sure.  After you weather that the rewards can be very satisfying.

A few years ago I hated rhodium.  Sounded hard, harsh, shrill and brittle to me and Gayle.  After some arm twisting I tried the Furutech versions and they sounded better, but still hard out of the box.  I left the system running on a two week trip with an old Purist Audio break-in disc running 24/7.  When we got home the world had changed.  The system sounded smooth, detailed and very clear with lower noise.  I was shocked.  That is when I started trying different brands and polishing up the connectors on what I was already using.

What I learned is that highly polished connectors sound way better than mill finished.  Polished connectors are essential for low noise connections because of micro-arcing.

The heavy-revy was that rhodium sounds incredible IF your system is not too bright to begin with in repro.

Expensive?  Yeah.  Too expensive for many. There are alternatives that are less expensive.  Bottom line is that rhodium and Furutech NCF in particular is close to magical

YMMV

Tom and Dave,

Thanks for the information.

I guess I just wasn’t ready to move up to this level until very recently. Now that I’ve got what are (hopefully) end game components, the time has come to get serious about cords, cables and connections.

Tom,
I’d wondered if Obsession to Uber followed by 7s to amp and pre were the way to go, or if Obsession directly into amp or preamp, or some other combination were the preferred or ideal connections. Have you tried any other connection combinations?

Will Pete’s burn in be enough or do I need to burn the cables another few hundred hours?

More later.

I decided to use what should be the best cord out of the wall, where the most current is drawn, then into the Uber, which made the most sense. I just have no desire (or time) to A/B all the other permutations knowing what I have is very good already.

My Obsession was a resale with a lot of time on it, even so, it has taken some extra play time. Or... probably my ears adjusted, or whatever other voodoo happens. It all sounds quite good to me.

I may well change my mind 5 times between now and two weeks from now, but I think I’ll operate under the assumption that my Obsession will need another couple (a few?) hundred hours of burn in. I’ll hook it up to my Nuprime IDA-8 and Adelphos speakers, and run it 24/7 for about ten days. Meanwhile, I’ll plug the 7s from wall to D Sachs amp and preamp.

That’s the plan for now. Perhaps I’ll actually stick to it.  :thumb:

Then, I’ll experiment with different combinations until I find bliss.

Nick,

I asked Mike about using the Takachi loaner for a tour. Mike's response was essentially "Pay me the $900 and I won't care where it goes."

If you want a basic 1200as amp, this is it. I had a foam cocoon made to protect it in transit that cost me about $50.00. Add shipping and it's going to be close to $1000. I don't know how much shipping would be.

If no one offers to buy it, I'll ship it back to Mike. He's got my Standard amp (upgraded with an internal DPS-4 PC sitting in his house as ransom for the loaner. [No. He didn't say this, but it's pretty obvious.] He won't ship my Standard until he either gets his $900 or gets the Takachi amp.

We fly back May 16th, so time is running out. I'll probably wait until Monday, the 21st to ship it to Mike.

Michael,
That’s a bit disappointing. He’s an interesting, innovative guy making interesting products. His new dac will use a similar methodology to the MSB $90,000 dac. I’ll make another post to continue my thread elsewhere on the forum. I’m also sending you a PM.

Update:

In a twist of fate (?) I have purchased the Takachi in exchange for getting a refund on my already paid for but undelivered Standard. There is no extra room in our luggage (thanks to my wife's heroic efforts to pack EVERYTHING imaginable), so the Takachi will remain in Taiwan until our return in November. Its future use will be determined by several different factors.

I have boxed it up and reconnected my ST-10. Once again, at low to reasonable volume, I notice little or no difference between the ST-10 and the Takachi. I know....what is reasonable?...My system is in my small office (9'W x 10'L x 8'h), so there's no need for so much power.

Once I'm settled back into my home in Corvallis, OR, I'll try out my Mivera SE. Then, I'll post impressions.

Flight leaves in just under 12 hours....Ciao!

The Obsession is a wonderful PC. Personally I feel a waste for the Uber. I would try the 7+ feeding Uber  [ we have had great results at home and shows ] and Obsession for components. Especially the amp or preamp. Digital Americans for digital or HO for digital.
The NCF outlets take 400 hours to sound their best. I almost gave up with the hardness and Hi Fi sound. Not any more. This break in shit is getting annoying as I use MOS tubes. For that kind of money they should be burned in at factory.
I have broken in more gear, outlets, power conditioners than most as a Beta tester and Audiophile. Thousands of hours to date while listening has taught me everything takes a minimum of 200 hours and most likely 400 to 500 for components and conditioners.
Give it a try.

I agree with Charles on the 7+ being the best cable to supply the UberBUSS.  The design criteria for the Uber was to create as neutral as possible, low impedance, low noise high current system supplies as possible.  The 7+ is also that voice.  Put the two together and the result is a stable supply of system power that can be sculpted after the fact to match components to the supply as well as each other.  The Obsession is stunning.  Putting it in front of the Uber "may" kill a bit of the magic that that cable has in spades.  My experience as well as many of my customers is: 7+ > UberBUSS > Obsession > everything else  + killer real.

Now you’ve done. You’re in big trouble now.

I may actually get to hear the one that Gregfisk is babysitting for me sometime next week.

The Obsession is a wonderful PC. Personally I feel a waste for the Uber. I would try the 7+ feeding Uber  [ we have had great results at home and shows ] and Obsession for components. Especially the amp or preamp. Digital Americans for digital or HO for digital.

Now ya tell me
Well, gosh.  I didn't know what all you had on order or how you planned to use the cables.  You told me had an Obsession on order, but I didn't know where it would end up.  Bottom line is the Obsession will sound awesome in any position.  Your system does sound awesome, huh?!

Just pokin' at ya. See post http://www.audionervosa.com/index.php?topic=6724.msg85436#msg85436 (http://www.audionervosa.com/index.php?topic=6724.msg85436#msg85436)

Yes, system sounds good, but some new speakers are in the house now too, Focal Sopra No 2's.

Give it a try.

charles

Why use your tube gear to drive the break in. I would think if you are just breaking in the outlets you could do so with a solid state amp that won't use up tube time on you. And for that matter does it really need to be an audio component at all Couldn't you just plug in a lamp into the outlets and run current trough them.

Do you really need to us audio components to break in a piece of power gear in the first place or would any drain do. What do the power gurus think about this?

I remember the post, Tom.  I pretty much knew it was a poke, but with some my recent experiences I wanted to make sure.

I'll be very interested in your appraisal of the Focals, especially compared to the M2's.  Let us know :thumb:
