Title: Getting ready for LSAF 2023 demo room
Post by: HAL on May 10, 2023, 02:52:29 AM
Have the first of two 6ft x 4ft acoustic diffusor walls test fitted with the P.I. Audio Group diffusor panels made by Igor.  These are portable for setting up demo rooms.

These are for the front wall, with GIK absorber panels for the side walls and bass traps for the corners.  Will experiment with the room and measurements when I get there.

The panels can be painted most colors.  Nice for working with existing room colors to match.

I'm getting excited about it.  Haven't been to an audio show since well before Covid.

Have not been to LSAF in more than a decade.

Will be interesting to see the new venue and what it holds acoustically.  Bringing lots of room tuning gear to see what can be done and CLIO Pocket to make measurements.

This should be fun! :)

Hope to arrive Wednesday and be ready for Thursday morning.  You may recognize the room treatments! :)

I need some brisket! :)

Have a Transit style van rental to take for the trip.  Used one before going to CAF 2018 and like how it drives and pretty comfortable.  Gets decent mileage as well.

The last pair of Neutrik Speakon connectors for the servo subs is ready to wire up and install in the OB H-Frame modules.  Then test out the two 3x12 servo sub stacks.  Will be time for some listening to get the sub drivers moving.  Might be time for some Saint-Saen's Symphony #3!  :)

The van is packed and fueled up.  Time for a road trip!

Depart today for Dallas TX.  Hope to be there Wednesday for getting the room for the LSAF2023 show.  Setup on Thursday.

Hope to see folks there for some music listening to the Magnetar II speaker system with the Danville Signal dspNexus 2x8 DSP processor, Orchard Audio Starkrimson Monoblock amps, and 3x12 OB H-Frame GR-Research servo subs with the Rythmik Audio A370XLR3 servo amps.

The system sounded really good before pack-up!

All the best at the show, Rich. Really wish I could be there, but just too much going on at home. Pls take pics and I’m asking that from Scott and Dave as well if they are able to.

Well.  Hell.

I've been trying to get to LSAF for about 6 years-ish.  Got my room reservation.

I also have 2 plumbers under my house.  What we all thought would be a one day repair on a leaking drain pipe is turning into an expensive nightmare! 🤨  l'll know the extent of the job later today, but it is looking like all of the old cast iron pipe has reached its practical lifespan.  I'm not particularly optimistic ...

Is it beyond the point of going in there and water blasting it clean? I was on the verge of needing to replace my cast iron pipes in so. California, but then we moved to Utah. Good luck with the repairs. I’m having landscaping installed tomorrow and Friday, otherwise I’d be in Texas.

I wish it was a situation where a clean-up would work. Problem is that the cast iron is rotted from the inside... gosh:  water + iron = rust... who knew?

We have a crawl space, not a basement, so it is a struggle for them to get all of the materials in and out along with their tools.  Better them than me.

This is ~ $4K I didn't need to spend.

Well, it's official.  The plumbers left after busting ass trying to get finished tomorrow.  Not going to happen. 😔  New, revised price: $4200.00-ish including tax with a 5 year warranty on their work.

Next year, God willing! 🙏🏼

Dave,
Sorry to hear about the plumbing problem and not making it to LSAF.  I can relate at this point!

HAL has arrived at the Embassy Suites in Dallas TX!

Room load-in is completed.

Tomorrow is setup and system tuning day.  In room 204 at the hotel.

Guys,
Sorry to hear about all the problems.  After recent water damage in my audio room, I can relate.

On a happy note, the LSAF2023 HAL room 204 is up and running with Qobuz for streaming and HAL's music library.  Early trials say this is the best sound to date.  Lots of LF capability for effortless reproduction.  :)

Sorry, but the room is not symmetrical, but no big deal for the sound quality.  :)

That’s good news, Rich. Any more fine tuning or you’re happy as is? Speaking of asymmetrical, I forgot where, but Klaus of Odyssey had the strangest shaped room I’ve ever seen. All things considered, it sounded pretty good.

Nick,
The room is 15ftx15ft with a large opening to one side, not what I would call a listening room, but very similar to the CAF Hilton room layout.

The diffusors, bass traps and absorber panels are doing well!  This is a nearfield setup to minimize the room acoustics interactions.  Kinda like sitting in a giant pair of headphones with imaging.  It works very well.

All the listener feedback has been very positive.  Makes the hard work and travel worthwhile.

Even the CAF and PAF show organizer stopped in today for a listen and he was very happy with the sound.  Who knows CAF2023 might be next. :)

Just got back home.  There is no doubt that the HAL room was an unqualified success.  To make that crowded little room sound as good as it did was an amazing acoustical feat.
The system played everything well... and people picked out just about everything as Rich had it connected to Qubuz.  I tried to contrast with my choices- picking classical piano and orchestral.  The Chopin nocturne placed a piano clearly on stage, with the listener within the first 10 rows.  Tone was stunningly good- seriously about as good as any speaker I've ever heard, and I've heard some good ones.  And to do it with a near field system was not anything I've heard before.  How close was that electrostatic mid/tweeter?? 7-8 ft?
There were a few other rooms that sounded pretty good (and a few that didn't), but nothing else was top of the line.  Rich's system was top of the line.    :thumb:

Scott,
Thanks for the wonderful comments!  :D

The Radian LM10n is a planar magnetic driver like your BG NEO8's.  It is a fairly new design available this year.  I grabbed a pair and with the standard on-axis measurements created a very flat frequency response for a driver that goes from 180Hz to 20KHz with some DSP correction.  The Danville Signal dspNexus 2x8 for both Saturday and Sunday music replay was my 3 year old prototype running prototype AKM AK4499 DACs for 4 channels to drive the Magnetar II speakers planars and servo subs.  These are my new reference standard for a music DAC.  They are incredibly good when a great analog designer gets to build them for use.

Getting to see many old and new friends is always the highlight of going to or running a show room.  Makes the work all worthwhile!  My nephew really enjoyed getting to see his first show where he worked for the weekend and with setup and teardown.  He loves music as well. :)

Now some rest for packup tomorrow!

Dave,
Thanks! Your are still here in spirit as some of the ideas used in the design were ones we discussed.  Al is a really good analog designer besides the digital side.

Even Danny gave it a big thumbs up! :)

I maybe putting something together for CAF2023 with the team, so look at your Nov schedule and give it a thought.

Let me describe it... a 10" planar magnetic in an open baffle winged frame.  Sitting next to a badass triple array of servo subs.   And some kind of magic box with a genie inside.   Rich was the wizard behind the curtain.

Here is the nearfield room setup from LSAF2023 room 204.

There were multiple video bloggers and only one talked to us.  The rest took video and moved on.

The room was very busy, and with only 3 seats and one sweet spot that we rotated people in for their requests with Qobuz, took awhile to get everyone in.

Thanks, Rich. Nice to get some pics as well. I am a bit surprised there weren't more companies at the show.

Nick,
It is called the Woodstock of audio shows.  Basically the website and event coordinator setup a room block and you just get a room from the hotel to setup.  No middle man involved.

There were multiple companies in the 16 rooms of the only floor, the second floor.  As an example GR-Research had different pieces in 3 rooms.  Mike Lundy had his modified Wedgies and 2x12 servo subs, another room had the NX-Studio's and I had the two 3x12 OB modular H-Frame servo subs.  There were other teams as well.

Just talked to Gary Gill about a room to demo at CAF2023 in Nov.  It is a GO!   :thumb:

Bringing a completely different idea to the show with the dspNexus 2x8 as the center.  This is going to stir the pot!

Thanks for that info, Rich. I was wondering about GR and those guys. What a nice and simpler way to run a show. I really would like to attend next year.

Once you experience (including hearing) the GR open baffle speakers you will never go back to closed box speakers.  I'll be traveling there (be GONE Evil spirits 😁) next week to take care of a few things including my next pair of speaks!

Now that I would like to hear.  :thumb:

I've heard very high end (north of $60K) open baffle speakers both at the NY Audio show recently and more than twice at the home of Steve Rabbitz (Sound Insight and a dealer for GT Audioworks). Here is a (somewhat outdated and since upgraded) photo https://www.gtaudioworks.com/ . I'll keep my closed box speakers, but do remain open minded to hearing GR's if the opportunity presents itself.

Not so fast there, pardner.   The best speakers I've ever heard were Danny's completely planar magnetic line arrays, and the Super 7 speakers are possibly next in line (both open baffle).  But I'd put the old LS9 (box speaker) above his current line up on sound alone.  The downside of the big guys is they are the devil to set up well.
Other box speakers I'd consider equals are some of the big Wilson's and TAD models- at a much higher price.
Now, understand, I can't hear for sh..

The LS-9 are terriffic speakers.  Punchy and transparent.  For me though, the openness, and absolute speed of properly designed open baffles are the clincher!

I can't hear either...🤓

Greg is a friend and we demoed together at CAF multiple times.  Greg makes great sounding planar/ribbon speakers.

I ran the digital front end for his room with a HAL MS-5 Music Sever and Danville Signal dspMusik 2x8 configured as a stereo DAC.  It had way more capability, but showed how well the DAC's in the system performed for music replay.

I have heard his planar/ribbon speakers for many hours and own 8 of his 20in true ribbons for my Megaliths line array project with 4 ribbons and 8 BG NEO10's per side.  Flanked by a pair of 6x12 OB H-Frame servo subs.  Worked pretty well but the open baffle frame was to unstable.  Now have two line arrays with 6 Dragonfire Acoustics DFA-510 planars per side with the servo sub arrays with a new open baffle design.

Danny's Line Force speakers with 3x12 servo subs are excellent speakers when Scott and I heard the first pair after build in Danny's original room.  That was a fun time listening to music!

What Scott heard at LSAF is the beginning product with the Radian LM10n planars.  There are other ideas in work.  Only time will tell.  For all systems, the dspNexus 2x8 DSP crossover and HiRez DAC's will be the heart of the system.  After my comparisons to other DSP processors, they all fall very short in sound quality.  The day Scott was there, he actually heard a prototype of the full upgrade DAC system using the original AKM AK4499 DAC's.  Those are no longer made after their foundry fire, but the single original chip been redesigned as a two IC system with digital filters and 32bit balanced R2R ladder DAC as separate silicon. :)  They are at the top of my very short list of the best sounding DAC's in products.

Yep, your set up at LSAF was right there with the very, very best... I'd say probably better than my LS9's, maybe better than the Serenity Super 7's.  And I like the 7's better than the current GR models.   To do that with one 10" driver, a whole bunch of subs, and your magic electronics was pretty amazing.

Dave,
On the road for 14 days with my nephew.  Longest time we have had to be together and he is now a well seasoned road traveler and understands high end music systems.  Started he and his brother off with a system using Danny's X-LS speakers years ago with my first Hafler DH110/DH200 system and it still works.  They both play instruments like my sister and I.

We were supposed to show at RMAF2022 and all know the outcome of that show.  Even had the Al Stiefel memorial room for the year at the Gaylord.  We were both bummed out when it did not happen.  He really wanted to go, so this was a great substitute.

Now to get ready for CAF2023.  He is ready as he lives 10 miles from that hotel.  Been 5 years since I had a room at that show.  Now to put together something that will stir the pot!!!   aa

A very nice review of the rooms from Norm Tracy from LSAF2023.

Rich,

That's a very nice review and it reminds me of what Scott posted. Norm did a very thorough write up of the show and I enjoyed reading it quite a bit. I think I'd enjoy LSAF a lot. Every audio show I've ever attended was so crowded and very hectic trying to get to as many rooms as possible. Maybe next year I will be able to attend....
