Elton John: The Red Piano

Red Line Entertainment (3) 180G LP Set

A live album taken from Elton's Red Piano Show at Ceasar's Palace in Las Vegas. In spite of the 180g pressing, not what I would consider an audiophile pressing. The vinyl itself is not so great and the SQ is OK, but nothing to write home about. But the performance does capture the essence of a recent Elton John performance and if you are a fan that overcomes any other shortcomings the LPs may have. And the price is right. It can be had on Amazon for under $14 (for a new, sealed 180g, 3 LP set.) Of course the lowest price will vary with time, but there were also several other new copies selling right around the $15 range, which is still good for a 3 LP set.

The Beatles: Magical Mystery Tour

Capitol LP

Bought this mint copy for my son's collection. 1980s maroon label Capitol pressing.

I really don't think I need to post samples for this one.

Come Swing With Me
Frank Sinatra | Format: vinyl

Frank and Glenmorangie Nectar D'Or single malt.

But why is there a tuba in the mix?

Billy May, "the bandleader," actually staff arranger for Capital records at this time, played the tuba when he was young, so he included it in his arrangements. Kenton also used tuba in his band of this era. It fills in the balls under the brash of bass trombone.

Don't laugh, I was in a record store about 10 years ago and there were these 2 high school girls looking at a display of Beatles CDs. One turned to the other and asked "Have you ever heard of these guys?" and her friend responded "I'm not sure, but wasn't that the band Paul McCartney played with before Wings?"  :duh  :duh  :duh

I LOVE the records Sinatra recorded with Billy May.  Sinatra was at his peak and May was a brilliant arranger who kept the music interesting while allowing Sinatra to shine as the star.

Minty GNP mono LP.  This one-off big band recording with Jack Sheldon as leader has an outstanding lineup and some terrific music.  Definitely worth having if you happen to find a copy.

Jazz ensembles featuring either alto saxophones (Benny Carter, Art Pepper, Herb Geller and Charlie Mariano), trumpets (Harry Edison, Conte Candoli, Pete Candoli and Jack Sheldon), or tenor saxophones (Buddy Collette, Bill Perkins and Walter Benton) with various rhythm ensembles; Quincy Jones, supervisor-producer. :thumb:
