Grabbed a few CDs out of the new releases bin at the Library today. Some good, some not so great. Starting with the best of the bunch -

Julia Fischer - Paganini: 24 Caprices

CD

Check out the video on this page where Julia discusses Paganini and the Caprices:

Rachel Kolly D'Alba:Passion Ysaye

CD

Eugene Ysaye: Six Sonatas for Solo Violin' OP. 27

This disc didn't really grab me. First off I listened to it right after the Julia Fischer Paganini disc so it had a really tough standard to live up to on both a musical and a performance basis and secondly, I am not a big fan of 20th Century Classical to begin with. While I liked this better than most 20th Century, IMO it was a bit of a letdown after the Fischer disc and rated a "just OK" in my book.

Denise Donatelli: When the Lights are Low

CD

An OK jazz vocal CD. SQ is decent and the performance is good, although not up to the standards set by some of the other current female jazz singers like Jane Monheit and Diana Krall.

Bill Frisell: Beautiful Dreamers

CD

When I saw this in the library I thought "this could be interesting, a jazz combo consisting of guitar, viola and drums." So I gave it a try. As it turns out the music pushes a little to much towards Avant Garde for my taste. Someone who is more into that type of jazz would probably like this a lot. It is just not my cup of tea.

Like I don't have enough versions of 'Emperor' I have to get another.

Have you heard Van Cliburn's version? How does this compare?

Pachelbel Canon, Albinoni Adagio & Other Baroque Melodies
Tomaso Albinoni (Composer), Johann Pachelbel (Composer), format: vinyl

Bought this for the 'Canon', but have been listening to the Trumpet piece on side 2 lately.

Just to throw a little gas on the fire......

One of my favorite performances of the Emperor is on a CD called "Entangled Devotions" which was put out by PopeMusic in 1995. It features Mark Gorenstein conducting the Russian Symphony Orchestra and Nuam Starkman on Piano. Not only is it a great Emperor, I think it was the best of the symphonic releases put out by PopeMusic.

Current available for a very nice price on Amazon:
