That's such a fine recording.  Several years back Jim D. Goulding and I sat in his living room playing his vinyl of that performance back to back with my Sound 80  with the St. Paul Chamber Orchestra.  He agreed that they were comparable in sound quality, yet very different performances.  Copland originally wrote Appalachian Spring for a chamber orchestra.  The smaller, much more intimate performance just does something different/better for me. 
And the Reference Recording version is pricey, while the Sound 80 flies under the radar selling NM for under $15 shipped.  It's still my favorite for picking out instrument placement.

I agree,  price of 1980s audiophile vinyl has really gotten up there.

Luckily I picked of my copy of that RR LP at Tower Records in NYC in 1988 when it was still in print and selling for only $15.99 (the price sticker is still on it.)

I miss Tower Records. There used to be one on Sunset Blvd in Hollywood. Not sure when it shut down. A great place to enjoy music and just hang out on occasion.

I sure miss them as well. I spent many Saturdays wandering through the store on 4th and Broadway in Manhattan. Every couple of months I would head into the city with an audio buddy or two and make a day trip to Tower. Not only did they have a huge store, but they also had a gigantic Classical Clearance Annex in the building next store. You could spend a day in there alone going through aisles and aisle  of cutouts (although the name was the classical annex they eventually ended up carrying all kinds of closeout albums there.)

Tower declared bankruptcy and closed all of their stores in 2006.  There is a good documentary on the rise and fall of Tower Records called All Things Must Pass. You can get it on Amazon, but I found it in my local library.
