SAS Audio Labs introduces the 1.5 Speaker
« on: May 11, 2013, 07:32:09 PM »
SAS Audio Labs would like to introduce the two way, 1.5 speaker.

The 1.5 works on the principle of one low frequency crossover in the upper bass region, thus eliminating the crossover(s) from the upper bass through the highest octave.

1) Dynamics are increased since the number of crossovers and parts count is minimal.

2) One does not have to worry about a crossover and associated problems between 700 and 4khz, where the ear is most sensitive.

3) Superior musical integrity, conherency, due to common driver over the entire midrange/highs.

4) Dual cabinets allow for optimal floor placement in a given room.

5) Individual crossovers in each cabinet allows for bi-wiring or bi-amping.

The result is a totally seemless, transparent, dynamic, natural sound.

Available in gloss black piano, cherry, or maple. Please allow two weeks as we build per order.

Introductory Price is: $2195.00/pr. Plus S&H (Normally $2995.00 plus S&H)

Total Weight: Approximately 130lbs

Woofer Speaker: $1000/each plus shipping

Full Range Speaker: $450.00/each plus shipping

Is there a tweeter in the full range speaker? Are there electrical amplitude filters in the full range? The description on the webpage is not clear. Maybe just impedance correction and no frequency filtering?

Is there just one woofer in the large box, or is it multiple different drivers?

Are both boxes ported?
Thanks Steve
Rich

Just impedance correction for the full range driver. No "tweeter" within. Just one 7" woofer in the cabinet.

It is ported, but one can easily stuff the port with a sock if one wishes. As you already know Rich (others may not though) the low frequency response and rate of fall off is different between ported bass reflex and sealed enclosures.
Having the option offers greater flexibility.

Cheers.

Thanks Steve, sounds good.

That full range driver must be really something to have caught your ear. Does it have a wizzer cone? The 8485 in the woofer box is a very fine driver.

Any chance you will be exhibiting the new speakers at a trade show this year? Capitol Audio Fest, or RMAF?

A friend, Bill White, dropped by on vacation with a pair, which I auditioned. I never thought I would like a single full range driver (no wizzer cone), but this one really surprised me.

My mistake Rich, 8535 driver.

I don't know if I will be exhibiting, but hope RMAF. I will check out the capital fest as well.

I just posted the raw FR and Impedance graph of the full range driver on my webpage.

Cheers.

Hi Rich,

After I auditioned the driver, I checked the FR and noticed a couple of positives.

1) There is not a pronounced resonance between 5-7khz, which has always been a problem with mid/higher reproduction drivers. As such the full range driver requires no extra circuitry, and thus more natural reproduction. Impedance correction also tends to minimizes any spikes.

2) Notice at the highest frequencies, a little rise. However, this is off set by the grill material. Thus one obtains quite linear reproduction even at the higher frequencies.

Sincerely,

Steve Sammet
