He was very outspoken, and a musical genius. On a televised NYP opening night concert a few years ago, where Eroica was to be performed he commented subtly and respectfully on how poorly Beethoven used chromatic scales as a composition element. I thought that was quite presumptuous. But since, I have been forced to think about his point whenever I hear chromatic scale funnies in Beethoven's works.
