Title: fuses and directions
Post by: Nick B on June 23, 2021, 06:11:59 PM
As I’m toying with the idea of trying fuses, I’ve been reading up a bit on the subject and that includes Synergistic Research and their Orange fuse. The issue of directionality came up. Since we are talking AC, does claiming that a fuse is directional make any sense? The question and answer below are from the SR website. Comments please.

Frequently asked questions.
Q: Are fuses directional?
A: Yes, fuses are directional.  Electricity should flow from the left to the right when you view the fuse.  If you do not know the direction of flow you should listen to the fuse inserted in both directions.  One direction will sound more detailed.  This is the correct way.

Here’s the link for the entire page.

So, since they are directional, shouldn't there be an arrow showing direction on them?
And wouldn't that direction be from the power source to whatever?

Hey, if we accept the fact that interconnects and speaker cables can be directional why should fuses be any different?

If they provided an arrow or a more complete set of instructions then it could be disproven and that's not the SR way.

When I’ve bought cables in the past, if there were arrows, I simply followed the directions from the manufacturer. Maybe I’ve tinkered a few times with reversing direction, but wouldn’t be able to recall specifics.
Now I just looked up how the signal is carried on a speaker wire, for example, and supposedly it’s AC. If so, then that AC vs a fuse AC gets even more confusing to me 😳

A standard Buss fuse is a metal cap soldered to a wire designed to melt soldered to a metal cap.  I don't see any way this could be directional.  Perhaps fancy fuses are made differently???
