equilateral triangle mandatory?
« on: May 15, 2020, 11:38:33 AM »
Ok so some of you are following my build thread of my room but I decided to put this question here since it is more general. Do we, or should we absolutely observe the equilateral triangle rule for positioning of speakers and listening position? My room is 13 x 22 and I have speakers 4' out from the front wall and 2 to 2 1/2 ' from side walls. that gives me roughly 8' between speakers.

I don't like where I end up in the room and prefer to be about 10 maybe 11' from the speakers. Will I die and go to hell. Should I expect less than optimal results? The reason i am asking is I am putting in lighting over the speaker position and i want to try to avoid moving the fixtures once installed.

Non-parallel walls, ceilings and floors is optimal, using the Golden Ratio! Have fun!  :duh

Jim goggle the Cardas site for speaker placing. You can do 1/3, 1/4 and 1/5 ratios. I would suggest the 1/3 rule for your sized room. 7' out from wall. Then try 1/5 have fun trying.

No. An "extra" 2-3' back only means you will have a slightly higher reflected vs direct sound ratio. That's purely a matter of preference, not right/wrong dichotomy. If it sounds fine to you, then you're good. "Fine" as in spatial and bass reproduction, etc. satisfactory.

Sit where you think it sounds best. If that isn't optimal for furniture placement, get a lighter chair, that you still find comfortable, that can be moved in and out of the sweet-spot.
I'm thinking of getting one of these or maybe one of these for just such a purpose.

Good advice. Move that seat back and forth until your satisfied. Actually a very easy solution BEFORE moving speakers.

Nice thread. I also recommend the Nordst Systems Solution disc. A few tracks help with imaging.
