DUST vs. HEAT
« on: February 20, 2021, 08:10:55 PM »
Considering my last topic posted was about audio rack suggestions, here's my next dilemma.

I have pretty much decided on what my new racks will be (thanks everyone who chimed in on that conversation) but I'm now debating over dust control vs. heat control. My first thoughts were to place my rack and components into a built-in closet/cabinet to keep the dust down. Of course, the next problem becomes heat build-up in a mostly enclosed environment! My equipment will only be on when the doors of the enclosure are open, but is that enough to keep things from overheating? Next, I'm thinking of adding fans and ventilation until my thoughts go to added noise and/or interference in the circuit.

Now, I switch things up in my head and say no to a closet/cabinet and go back to the dust issue! So I'm thinking of an open pair of racks and covering everything up when not in use with something like a HUGE toaster cover!

Just keep in mind, the only thing crazier than my asking about this is you guys answering it!

TIA
Bill

Bill,

1) learn to ignore dust, not cater to it
2) this is the biggest toaster cover (4’ x 2’) I could find

Think about plastic computer printer covers also.

Maybe just find a beautiful tapestry and drape it over rack?  But with your TT, some of the rug-like braided and more expensive ones are too heavy.

Go to Amazon or Google Images and search on "tapestry" to get some ideas.  Get polyester or cotton to ensure light weight and ease of handling.  Some are beautiful and cheap.

I just vaccum my stereo components once in a while and I have no heat or dust issues.

The question at hand is. Does your gear put out heat to begin with ? If so if you can keep some room from walls and vent clg. a non issue.

Oops, sorry about that. 😏
Actually I do understand the reluctance to vacuum. I used to have the bulk of my equipment
in a mostly enclosed entertainment center. It was a righteous pain in the ass to vaccum
the dust off the equipment in it.
I have since given the thing to my wife to use as bookshelf. This time I am going to set up my system on open rack with access from all sides. Same amount of dust with less heat and easy to clean.

Thanks gentlemen! I guess I’ll put more thought into it once I am closer to actually moving into a new place and all of this actually becomes real!

I don't have the link handy but just search ebay for custom acrylic boxes.
