Title: Windows 10 Creator 1703 native 24/192 Driver
Post by: _Scotty_ on August 08, 2017, 07:43:42 PM
With the advent of W10 Creator version 1703, the ability to playback 24/192 content, without resorting to downloading a driver from an equipment manufacturer, has finally arrived. I can playback all of the music files I have via kernal streaming in jRiver, 24bit integer must be selected using an Auralic Vega or a playback error occurs. 24 and 32bit floating point as well as 32bit integer are the other options available.
Even DSD-DSF files up to DSD128 stream with no problems what so ever.
Sound quality is a step up from the Auralic supplied ASIO driver. The size of the recreated acoustic space is larger with improved depth as well as width. The sense of total immersion in an artificial 360 degree sound field from studio recordings is much improved. There is also a much clearer window into the recording with a sharp reduction in haze or fog in the sound stage.
Overall a nice upgrade on the cheap with no downside in my system, of course YMMV.

Cool

What do you have to do to get the patch? Normal windows update? I see it came out in march 2017, so maybe it's already installed?

I was using WASAPI up until a month ago when messing around, much to my surprised I found Kernel Streaming to be a better play back option. Up til I got the HAL MS-3 mini-pc with Windows 10, I had always used Windows XP with Asio4all and I longed for the day I could try out WASAPI. And now I find the ages old Kernel  streaming to be preferable with Windows 10. Just never know,,,,

Cheers,
Robin

Yes Rich, it my HAL MS-2 Music Server. The W10 Creator update really can't be dodged, so one has to hope for the best. This version of Win 10 seems almost as responsive to commands as Win 8 which is kind of nice.
Proceeding down the list from factory supplied ASIO driver to Direct Sound then WASAPI and finally KERNAL streaming. Each move towards KERNAL streaming from ASIO downward results in a clearer window on the music with a bigger space and less haze. No stuttering or hiccups switching between bit rates or sample rates.
