I was listening to Art Farmer and Jim Hall "Interaction" last night. I friend had loaned me a copy. He's a big Jim Hall fan, and I'm a big Art Farmer fan. He had heard a distortion on a number that made him think he had a bad copy, bought another, and heard the same thing, so he sent one home with me for evaluation.
After a couple of plays, I also heard some issues one number, and upon further play, noticed that the miking was entirely different, The album cover back it up, listing two recording engineers. A bit of Google time revealed that the songs were laid down over three session.
One guy had miked everything much closer, and a bit hot on trumpet and bass (with a bit of distortion). The other has recessed the drums further and had completely rearranged the band. It got me wondering what other albums done over multiple takes show the effects of different sound engineeers? Anyone notice this on other recordings?
