I've had a blow out
« on: June 02, 2021, 07:06:08 PM »
Hey guy's need your input.
Have a blow out in a midrange driver. The existing is an Eton 7-380-32 HEX.
Speaking with the speaker manufacturer and noting it is a 25 yr old speaker,
the driver is of course no longer available. They said a 7-300A8-32HEX would work.
Well, can't find that one either. Would like to find the 7-212/C8/32 HEX but as of now
can't find anything by Eton other than a paper cone 7 series. From what I understand
Eton has shut down all manufacturing while moving to a new complex.
Where do I go from here? Should I get the paper until the Hexacone become available
or should I look into new speakers. Maybe get a pair of bookshelf that I can later use in
an office setting while waiting. Is the Eton worth the wait? This has got me really screwed up.

Thanks
Don

Don,

I can’t speak as to Eton, replacements, is it worth it, etc. But it sure seems like a fun idea to find a terrific deal on some great bookshelf speakers and enjoy them while you’re sorting all this out. Depending on your budget, there should be a ton of new, used stuff that you’d enjoy.

+1 on this.  One of the issues with oldies but goodies is when parts go bad.

There are a TON of great small speakers out in the wilds.  Many of them will mate well with a subwoofer and surpass the performance of Don's Legacy's.  Time has marched on and there have been a lot of improvements in drivers:  cone materials, motors, surrounds, all of these are better these days.  I was never enthralled with Kevlar cones due to their propensity for hard to control resonances in their stop band.

I would eat this elephant one bite at a time.

Thanks Nick and Charles:
Went to where to buy and it gave me the distributor.
Nice conversation with them and he got me in touch with Ember Audio.
They're 30 miles away. Ember doesn't have available but said he has a
pair of F502 SP (special production) coming in next week. Told him they're
out of my price range (double the price of F502) but it will tell me if I like
the house sound. The F502 is 25 hundred and doable. Some of their models are
way up there.
Your thoughts Charles would be appreciated.

Fyne is a group of designers from Tannoy who split off when Tannoy moved a lot of their actual production to China. Fyne's are still built in Scotland. Similar house sound and first class cabinet work.  If you prefer a floor stander to a bookshelf model the used market is full of options at all price points.  For a bookshelf the Fritz's are hard to beat and worth a call to Fritz as he loves to talk audio.  For new floor stander's the Vandersteen 1Ci is still a great all around musical speaker after all these years and many revisions and only $1700.

Jack: thanks for the info
Robin: I looked everywhere but Ebay. Wouldn't go used but
the 7-212-32HEX will fit and are new. I'm thinkin about that.
Main problem is the 1 1/2 to 2 1/2 month delivery.
Thinking also about 25 Yr old technology vs new now. Will see
what's out there compared to the old faithfuls. Just not sure if I'm
the bookshelf sub kind a guy. Been quite a while since I've been out
here on the playing field.
Keep the comments coming though, greatly appreciated.

Don

This is a very good alternative especially for the price which includes the extremely heavy stands.  Sub not really needed at least in either of the rooms I played them in. They are large Harbeth 40 sized speakers. And with MD you have the 60 day return window.

Remember, just because a driver will physically fit does not in any way mean they will be plug and play.  More than likely there will be crossover modifications necessary.  Without proper measurement gear and access to parts to tweak the driver you will be in for along tough haul.  Differences of tenths of a dB cause a lot of voicing issues.  Even drivers of the same type produced in the same run are usually measured for differences in parameters by manufacturers to produce closely matched pairs to insure side to side SQ matching and image coherency.

The spec sheet listed in the eBay ad is NOT for the S2 variant. I'm sure the spec between the -32 and the -S2 are very different due to the different one materials and the SQ between the Grey Hexacone and the yellow cone will cause all kinds of image problems.

Well, that was enlightening.
I am going to try out the Fyne F502 when Ember Audio gets it in.
Once I've got something in the house I'll take the mids out of the Classics
and see if they can be repaired. If so I'll stick them in an office system or see
if someone else would like them. I did hear a pair of Dynaudio bookshelf that
blew me away. Should have for 35 hundred. That's just more than I want to pay.
