Title: Tube Tester?
Post by: Barry (NJ) on February 07, 2023, 10:41:00 AM
Anyone in the area have one, or maybe know where I can go to get some tubes tested?

I'm not anywhere near NJ, but I've got an Eico 666 tester.  I'd be happy to test them for you (if my manual has settings for them) if you want to send them and pay return shipping.

Hey Barry,
I have a Hickok as well as an Eico tube tester, if you need any tubes tested (as long as they're not funky Russian types (unless you have an equivalent chart))...

Cheers,
Pete

Thank you sir, that's a possibility! Let me wait a bit to see if someone in the area can help, and if not I'll send you a PM to make arrangements.

as a fyi they are 6922 tubes, to see if your tester can handle them(?)

Thanks Pete! They're 6922 tubes, pretty generic from my little research and understanding.
Can I take a ride out to you one weekend? Worse case, and probably cheaper  if I just ship 'em out and back.
But it'd be nice to say hello :)

6922...   those are easy to test.   But you might just look at a pair of Russian 6N1P or 6n23 types since their so cheap.   Or I can probably find a pair of 6dj8 types to loan you if you don't find anything closer.

Not in a super hurry, hopefully you'll be better soon and I can come get them, or you can come visit and we give them a listen.
If you don't mind schlepping a pre-amp too, I'd love to hear a tube pre in my system(?)

Hey Barry,
If you want me to test them, bring them over & we can have a "Music Appreciation" (perhaps a mini Rave!) session, or just mail them to me!

Cheers,
Pete

Hey Pete, Thank you!

Evan sent over a fresh set. I'm going to swap those in and see how it goes.

So Evan sent me a fresh set of tubes to try, but sadly they didn't fix my issue. Now when I first inspected the board I was looking for something obvious, like a burnt resistor or a leaky mess around a capacitor. More careful inspection this evening and I noticed that one of the caps is a bit swollen at the top. So I ordered some replacements and I'm hoping that fixes the issue.

Note the top of the cap towards the front right...

Well, I installed 2 new caps, the one with the swollen top and its partner, and I have the little something I had lost back in the sound  :thumb:

It's always a good feeling when you can bring gear back from the abyss.  Congrats.    :thumb:

Big thanks to all who offered to help, and especially Evan for sending out a set of tubes for me to try out!
