I got this 2CD after hearing the song "Time after Time" from on the movie "Julie and Julia." Hearing the song I'd never heard before triggered strong feelings. So I found out who sung the soundtrack and then looked up Margaret Whiting whom I'd never heard of. Sure enough, she looks a lot like 2 women I dated loooong ago. This week one of them emailed out of the blue after 20 years. Uh-oh! I wish the other one emailed me instead.  Maybe if I listen to this record enough she will...

The music is really great, simple pop songs from the 40s, post war. My wife and I danced in the LR when I put it on, she loved it! The SQ of the CD isn't great however. Wicked digititis on strings and anything that dares to venture above 3kHz. Fortunately, Margaret's voice has no trace of sibilance, smooth and sweet as creme brulee. It's too bad this music is too passe to reissue for baby boomer vinylists.

Adele 19

Columbia CD

I never really listened to this album, so when I saw it on the shelf in the library I thought I would give it a try.  It was OK, but IMO nowhere near worth all the hype I had heard about it over the years. Maybe I was just expecting to much.

tmazz --- you really need to hear the vinyl version, which I'm playing right now... very intimate with lots of soul... the digital versions, really SUCK! Digititus, shrieky, the loudness wars... Not sure where the Vinyl was mastered but on "21", Sterling Sound in NYC mastered the LP... The LP on "21" has vastly superior SQ compared to the Digital version... just wondering if this is the case with "19"...

Good to know Pete. I was worried that the new pop LPs would sound like the CDs, which sound like mp3s.

This is an awesome album. Perfect recording. Dynamics, space, tone are all there very intense. This may be the best recorded string quartet record I have. Naxos is always good, but this is ridiculous.

The music is very unique, original, modern, smart. The band is very tight, extremely well rehearsed for this tough music. Feels like they have something to prove, like the greatest musicians always do. The overall theme of the recording is all about dynamics. Obviously the loudness dynamics are here but every facet of music is taken to extreme. Chaos and harmony, dread and humor, peace and violence, dissonance and simple harmony. I have never heard such innovative and original effects and techniques written for string quartet. This is very entertaining and enlightening.

This is my kind of music!  :D

Hope you enjoy it Pete! Usually our musical tastes are similar!  :thumb:

Solti/Cleveland tears it up. Ballsy, technically excellent. Karajan's Egmont is one of my favorite Beethoven ditties ever, but this has stricter tempos and more bad ass attitude from Solti. Huge orchestral sound, more compression but it is very tasteful, does what it's supposed to do.
