Chet Baker: My Funny Valentine

British Import CD

Different from the American album of the same name. This CD contains  a live recording made at The Odd Fellow Palais in Copenhagen in Dec of 1955.

Nice performance, but I can't give a definative ruling on the SQ since I am listening on computer speakers at work. (Hey, it's not the mancave, but it beats sitting here in silence.  8) )

Reggatta De Blanc [Original recording]
The Police (Artist) | Format: Vinyl

Side 2 may be scratched beyond listenability, that's what happens when you handle a diamond stylus while drunk in your 20's. But side 1 is getting it done for me.

handel: "Scipione" re-release on Harmonia Mundi. Very nice music. I'm hooked on this period. The arias are wonderful. The In-between stuff (reciting text) is a bit fluff.

The Cedar Walton/Hank Mobley Quintet: Breakthrough

CD

There is something about this album that just doesn't sit right with me. Recorded in 1972 it seems a bit mechanical and just doesn't have the same soul that Mobley's work in the 50s for Blue Note did. That said if I did not have his earlier work to compare it to I would most likely be very happy with this CD, but it is just not up to what I expected to hear. (I wouldn't lay out a lot of money for it, but for 3 bucks on amazon it was not a bad find.)

Sonny Rollins: The Complete Prestige Recordings

7 CD Box Set

This one is going to take me a while to get through. Started at the beginning with Disc 1.

From Amazon
"This 7 CD set traces the rise of tenor saxophone giant Sonny Rollins from a talented neophyte with a big beat and a big sound, to one of the most commanding melodic and rhythmic innovators of the 1950s. Inspired by R&B/Blues master Louis Jordan, Rollins soon fell under the spell of tenor saxophone trendsetters Coleman Hawkins and Lester Young, gravitating to the enormous sound of the latter, and the spacious phrasing of the other. And finally, there was the grand rhythmic/harmonic mastery of Charlie Parker, Bud Powell and (especially) his elder Thelonious Monk and contemporary Miles Davis."
