Title: Angel City Tour
Post by: Response Audio on December 15, 2010, 03:01:10 PM
Hey there Hugh,
When you start your tour, I want to be in line for the M845 mono blocs

Those are some beautiful pieces and from what I heard at RMAF, the Melody gear is would be on my short list for tube amps.

But...... I want to be last in line

Howdy Bill,

Do you mean M845, PM845, or MN845?

You're always 1st in my book BUT as you wish, you'll be last. :D

I thought it'd be a good idea to have your own thread to discuss tour possibilities, Hugh.. so here it is!
I split the topics above from the sticky thread because I want to keep that more general.
Thanks,
Carl

You got it Chris. I have a thing for the M845 monos

As much as I like the others, especially the big boys after seeing them at the show, I think the M845s would give me more of that SET sound. They're all sexy looking and the match the Purity linestages :thumb: I would love to hear a Purity matched up with the Melody amps

I don't think you are going to want to send the MN845 giants out on tour

Thank you guys.

Chris,
Thanks for the warm welcome. :)

Bill,
You're right, MN845 are too big and heavy to go on tour. ;)
Currently I have the Pure Black 101 playing along with PM845 and it is the BEST I've heard personally.

Hugh, would love to try them out. I use 211 based rebuilt Consonance amps with Pipedream speakers. Please place me on the tour for NYC, thanks. Maybe we could plan around one of our  Audiosyndrome club meetings [ third Friday of the month] and feature the amp. Two birds one stone.

Whatever you send I would be happy to use to host an event at my place.  My speakers are a bit demanding on power, I would say minimum 100wpc for a ss amp, not sure about tube power.
If you're sending speakers, I use a McIntosh MC402.

I would keep the gear swapping to a minimum.  Most folks know what my room/system sounds like so there would be a good comparison to my normal setup.

If that sounds good, put me on the list of whatever you want to send.

New tube amp for my system, or rake grapple for my tractor ....

Carl, we have Blue Shift Audio, an Angel City Audio dealer right here in Fuquay Varina, NC, not 10 miles from me.

http://www.blueshiftaudio.com/

He might want to come to a g2g, or host one himself, or bring the equipment, or whatever.

That PM845 does look very cool... or is it hot?  8)  70W SEPP.   :thumb:

Guys,

I'm thinking about doing 2 things at the same time.

First, we are scheduled to have Melody MK88, our new entry level integrated amp. and our Trinity LCR trio at a gtg in Seattle the weekend of January 29 which we could forward to  the first stop of the tour on the East Coast as a gtg at someone's home.

During that East Coast gtg, we could also send a pair of M845 if you guys so desire.

After the gtg, we can forward the MK88 & Trinity to the next person on the tour list.

What do you guys think?

Please feel free to add your comments/inputs so we all can enjoy a little gtg together.

Thanks all,

Tim is in Ohio of East Street Audio.

My only concern is the cost of shipping speakers and amps around on tour. I would guess $200 per stop, insured, for the 2 speakers and 3 amps.  If Derek plans to stock them anyway, that would be the easiest way for the NC gang to hear them.  Next summer I will have SET friendly passive speakers built, but that's a little way off. Most of our speakers in NC are pretty hungry.

Rich,

Your concern is valid.

Shipping PM845 will be expensive since they are heavy.

Whichever way you guys want, I'm here to accommodate. :)

If I had compatible speakers, I might pay $200 to audition PM845....

I once heard another brand's 50W 845 SEPP amp, costing twice as much, but probably best amp I ever heard.

I haven't done any tours, but wouldn't the person who is auditioning and reviewing the item pay for shipping either to or from his location?

Rich,

The PM845 is now residing in my reference setup along with Pure Black 101 Pre. :)

Well, may be we'll have a gtg near you so you can hear for yourself.

Btw Rich,

What do you mean by compatible speakers?
Title: Re: Angel City Tour
Post by: richidoo on December 19, 2010, 12:43:13 PM
Btw Rich,

What do you mean by compatible speakers?

Sensitive, benign impedance, full range, passive crossover. My current speakers are active 2 way with a strong tonal personality. Not great for auditioning new amps. But the next speakers on my DIY list should be ideal for exploring my myriad amp fetishes.  :thumb:

Hey Hugh,

Don't tell me about being a skinny dude that can't handle the cold. Remember, we hung out at RMAF! The older I get, the less I can deal with the cold as well and it's a nice cool 12 degrees outside right now and we should reach down to about 7 degrees tonight. :duh

For poeple that will not be on the tour and want to hear the Melody gear and Hugh's speakers, maybe we can arrange for a time to have a gathering here where you can come up. Maybe if we all pitch in and buy Hugh a nice winter coat, he will show up as well and talk to everyone and answer questions.

Hey guys, if there's anybody within a few hours of central ohio I'd love to do a gtg and show off some gear.  I just don't have much space in my small house.  I may even be convinced to travel to the northeast and save Hugh some frostbite if there's a gtg brewing there ;)

FWIW, the 18wpc AN211 powered the 4ohm, 90db sensitive Trinity's to more than adequate volume levels at RMAF.  So far, all the Melody gear I've used has played a bit beyond their numbers.

Oh, and somebody mentioned the heat from a pair of 70w PM845's - the MN845 monsters are 150w class A.   Those of you in northern climates can stick it to the utility companies by just playing music all day long to heat your house.

Depends when its coming.  We would love to show it off at our Audiosyndrome club meeting. We could feature two homes and systems with a two day event. All the local clubs would be invited.
If the tour does not coincide with our meeting dates then a " Special Event" meeting can be arranged.

When is the meeting?  Sounds like a great event at which to show off some of our stuff.

We did have somebody send us a message about a possible GTG, but he didn't want to post it on the forum yet since the timeline is still up in the air.  That looks to be more like late spring though, so we definitely don't want that to be the first stop on the tour.

October: RMAF.

So, please let me know about gtg then I'd love to attend.

Glad the LS-9s are up and running. With those crossovers, you are looking at a few hundred hours for full potential. With those large Mundorf foil inductors and Silver/Gold capacitors and Teflon, it is not going to happen overnight.

When is the best month to visit?

I'm a skinny old guy so cold weather would not be nice to my bones. :)

 Hugh,
A great town to visit. May is just beautiful here. Late May especially. We are looking at May 21the or 28the. Both Saturdays.  We may even be able to put you up in one of our members homes. I'll cook some nice Italian food for you guys.

Charles,

Thanks for the info.

I think May 28 might just be the ticket.

LSAF ends on the 15th so this would give me a few days to get ready for NY.

Thanks again for the opportunity.

Looks like the 28th is good for me as well.  The only potential drawback is that it is Memorial Day weekend, which means many people will have family plans for the weekend.  I'm fine with the 21st as well, but like Hugh said, it may be too quick a turnaround from LSAF.

Not to mention the holiday weekend traffic that people will have to fight to get to the meeting.  :(

OK, tentatively I'm up for May 21st. :)

How does this usually entail?

It's going to be my very first time so any help is appreciated.

I'm officially a go for both Shadowlight's gtg on June 18 and the Audiosyndrome meet in May. (assuming the May date ends up working for them)

Hugh and I will have to figure out what to do gear-wise.  Shipping stuff around has proven to be perilous for the gear, with boxes getting beaten up pretty badly when we shipped everything to Vegas for CES, and then again when the AN300B and MK88 went to Seattle for a gtg.  The AN211 also suffered some minor damage en route back from Stereomojo.  What we may do is have new gear shipped to me, and then I will drive the gear to both East Coast gtg's. (9hrs-ish is doable)

Excellent suggestion Jack.

Thanks.

That's kind of how we shipped LS9s to our customers.

A:  Yes, I know - so what has taken you so long  :duh

B:  Does this suggestion qualify me for free speakers or other gear?

On Edit - Never mind about B.  I just remembered you sent me grill posts ....

My answers below.

A. Just to ship the AN211 was more than enough weight for Stereomojo since it's 80lbs. :)

B. More free stuff? ;) :D

I have split TMT's excellent crating suggestions into a new sticky under this section called 'How to Ship for a Tour'.
Thanks!
