Digital recorder OK for guitar/band recording?
« on: December 10, 2009, 07:44:47 AM »
HI,
My 15yr old son needs a recording device for recording his "jam" sessions w/ his band, and also some solo practice sessions.  A guy at the local music store recommended a vocopro recorde 1 for $100.  I want something not too expensive to start with and then as his skills grow get into a home recording studio setup.

Are there any other products that I should consider?  Or other gear that I need to get?

Zoom H2 - got one for my daughter and she loves it...

The H4n is even better but starts to get pricey.

The ART DIO is a AD or DA converter used to record the music on the computer. So one can record a and then listen to the results immediately. Has a tube for that fuzzy feeling and can be used to play with the sound. Sam Ash carries them as well as other music centers.
The added benifit IMO is that its a VG DAC for playback. Owned one for a while until the Lector outclassed it

Ditto on the zooms. Some have functions good for rehearsing and practicing.

Unfortunately ART took the DI/O out of production over a year ago. It is still a great unit, but if you want you will have to hunt it down on the used market. (Hint: although the official model is DI/O search under DIO as well as many people leave out the slash when listing the name.)
Remember, it's all about the music........
