Want to pickup some records for the Zu Audio tour day.  Any tips on how to select and what to look for?  Planning to hit PREX next weekend.

Want to pick something that I already have a CD for so I can compare

W/o knowing what you have on CD already it's kinda hard to say.

Steely Dan on vinyl, clean, usually good.

Or, post some CDs you have, maybe folks have the vinyl and can save you the expense. Between Bill and I we should have a few things you might have.

Whether the recording is good or not ought to show up in the post when they listen to it, though often nothing is said.

I was often guilty of that, but have been trying of late to comment on SQ and post links to samples.

As to why folks buy things, good luck. That's a very personal thing that may not translate. Hell, I've been record shopping with Bill for 2 years now, I still don't understand a thing he buys.

Thanks

I don't usually buy on what others comment or think. Gene is a prince of a guy but as he stated  when it comes to our musical choices we are on diff. highways. I need to hear for myself to decide wether or not I like it. If something peaks my curiosity I'll investigate it on my own. Now that's not to say if I'm offered a suggeation followed by a CD-R that I won't try it.......Bill

I buy records mostly because:

  • I like the artist
  • I like the recording

I also buy the occasional guilty pleasure.

In general, I don't buy records that fail to fit into either of the above categories.  Perhaps I am missing something here, but what more reason does one need?  As for an explanation of why I like an artist or a recording...don't hold your breath.  I've said it before and I'll say it again, search is your friend.  If you want to learn something about an album I bought then do your own homework or ask me a question.  Don't expect me to write an exposition about my purchases when the only person who might give a damn about it is me.

Sorry I was not clear on my request.  If I am looking to purchase a record what do I look for and stay away from:

Look for artist and stay away from dust, scratches, condition of the outside cover etc?

I am all over the place on the musical taste from jazz, vocals, classical and electronica.

Jerome, for me right now the only thing that counts is do I like the artist or not or I am trying to listen to a new artist.  That is where having the Princeton Record Exchange close by is both good and bad.  Good in sense that it is cheap to pickup cd's but bad that you kind of go overboard when you start thinking about oh it is only $1.99 what the hell let me try it state

Records should be clean and shiny, without obvious cuts and scratches.  Sometimes a record can be dirty and still sound wonderful; and clean shiny records can still have noise.

Usually a clean cover indicates a record received good care, but always examine the record itself to be as sure as you can be.

Look in the deadwax, the area from the last groove of sound to the label.

Everyone knows, (or should), the artist has some say in how the music is recorded, but that the recording engineer has the final say.

What I've learned as I re-explore vinyl is that where the vinyl is pressed, and who presses it, plays a role as well. This is usually found in the deadwax.

Spend some time in the Steve Hoffman forums searching on 'deadwax' to get a feel on this topic. Here's one to get started.

Today is the 5th Annual Record Fair held at the Columbia Museum of Art.  Each year dealers from all over descend on our tiny city to display and sell their wares and share stories of music and the hunt for the elusive album.

The highlight for me is picking through WUSC's culls.  They usually sell promo CD's by the bag for a token amount, say five bucks. I pick through a bunch of stuff I've never heard of and grab anything that looks interesting.  Each year I bring home about 50 discs, half of which are awful, a third of which are good for someone else and about a quarter are absolute magic.  The real fun is talking to the kids who work at the radio stations and discovering what the music sounds like at home.

Very excited.
