I think things have changed and others have not.

We now know that above 20khz is perceived by the rise time (attack). Probably fall time as well. So much for the we cannot hear above 20khz crowd.

We can produce better drivers, better parts, better electronic components. I have a special test jig for listening testing my preamplifiers and amplifiers, been doing it for years, so I know how accurate my preamps and amps are to their inputs.

There are still a few that wish the best possible reproduction possible. And to me it is worth it. Instruments and voices really sound accurate and natural. The price is not tens of thousands of dollars for such, as some claim. But neither is it a few hundred.

Whether the public wants the best is another story.
I think things have changed in the last 60 years. My .02 cents.

Cheers
Steve

ps. Caveat: I have retired some 5 years ago, no longer manufacturing/selling anything.

Pre/Amp/ICs are the only components that can be tested for accuracy/naturalness.

Technology is better but imo the music is worse so it's a much more tech focused hobby now.
