March 2017 Meeting
« on: March 06, 2017, 05:51:59 PM »
The March meeting will be held on Friday the 17th at the Woodhaven, Queens home of Ernie Naples. Ernie has two terrific systems for us to listen to. HIs current state of the art system includes the Linkwitz Labs (DIY) Orion 3.4 open baffle design speakers with supplemental sealed subs, all using the Linkwitz active Analog Signal Processor. Each channel has five SEAS drivers (2T, 1MR, 2W), and two Peerless drivers (2W). Powering the 14 total drivers are two ATI 1807 multichannel amps providing 7 amps per channel, or 1 per driver; 14 x 180 watts RMS into 8 ohms total system power. Whew!!

The media sources for the system are .wav files from CDs, ripped to 24/96 or 24/192 and stored on 2.56TB of SSDs. The media player is a Samsung Windows 7 core i7 laptop with SSD, running foobar2000, outputting to a m2tech hiFace Two USB3 to SPDIF converter. The output of the converter feeds the SPDIF input of an MSB Analog DAC with (optional) volume control and power base.

And a completely updated state of the art system from the 1970s. Speakers are AR LSTs, an acoustic suspension design with nine drivers per speaker (4T, 4MR, 1W), using a passive crossover. Power is supplied by a Carver/ Phase Linear 700B, 350 watts (+/-) per channel (upgraded by Borrero & Assoc.). The preamplifier for this system is a Carver/Phase Linear 4000.

A Marantz 8001 SACD/CD player provides the tunes.  Other related equipment is a Thorens TT w/Shure V15 III XMR cartridge. Sources are CD, SACDs, vinyl and reel to reel tape.
Those who prefer visuals with their sound can head down to the lower level man cave and experience an HD 1080P home theater projected on a 10 foot screen, accompanied by a THX certified 5.2 surround sound system. Doors open at 7:30.

The March meeting was cancelled due to the snow storm.  It will now be held Friday April 14th, all other details remain the same.
