My Shure e500 in ear monitors that I bought used from old AN member biglou bit the dust on vacation last summer. I can send them to Shure for repair, but since they appear to be an unrepairable item I am hoping they will just replace them with the current model in exchange. The fixed repair price is $160 so you never know. Maybe they're just shoot WD40 down the hole and it will work again. poop

But if they do replace them with current version, I'm in luck, and I'm glad I procrastinated in repairing them:

I like the straight wire they using now. Previous models like mine and e530 had the wire wrapping up and over the top of the ear and down behind your head. majorpita.

Remember, there is nothing on the planet that can't be fixed with either WD40 or Duct Tape.  If it's supposed to move and it doesn't - WD40, if it moves and it shouldn't - Duct Tape. (Of course either case can often be helped with the use of a hammer.)

I don't know about shooting speedoil (what my kids call wd40 cuz i spray it their speedy toys) into earphones, because it leaves behind residue. I think it's an electrical problem.  One ear works, the other is dead.   Time to send it in.   But I'm contemplating spending the repair fee on some different ones instead. I take forever to decide these things, when spending money is involved.

I wanted some earphones today while I go mow the lawn, but the Shure's were still not fixed due to my laziness. So I got on shure.com to start the process (aka procrastinate the lawn mowing) and found a link to a troubleshooting forum thread sounded like my issue. They suggested wax is 90% of the repairs that come in, but also moisture can cause a phone to stop. They say wait overnight to dry it out. I tried them a week after they broke last summer but they were still dead. But I figure I should try again after a long dry winter. Sure enough, they are working again now.   Just in time for little league baseball games.  :thumb:   I will try to store them in a dry place like near an AC vent in the future.

Maybe Shure should send those 90% a link to our ear wax thread.  :thumb:

Good idea!! Except they make 145 to clean each pair (out of warrantee repair fee.)  That's why I  procrastinated. No really... :^o

I finally got around to sending them in for repair, only a year after they broke.  :duh
I paid the flat fee for e500 out of warrantee repair, and they sent me a brand new e530.   :thumb:

I have a pair of the SE420's and they sound pretty nice on my Zune HD.

I have the old Shure E4C.  What amp did you use with your Shures?  I need to get me a decent headphone amp so I can use my Nixon DAC.

Thanks,

Brandon

I still don't have a dedicated HP amp. I use them with my Jukebox 3 portable. It has enough power to drive them to good level, I turn it down to 1/3 of max to listen.  But I would really like to hear the 530s with a good high end HP amp. On the portable the bass is strong but not particularly well defined. mp3s compression could be the culprit too. They discard data at frequencies that we are less sensitive to.

I am working with Sol to voice his 9V battery powered HP amp, but the next tweek needs different transistors, which is major surgery and low priority right now.
