Ella Fitzgerald Sings the George and Ira Gershwin Songbook (with the Nelson Riddle Orchestra)

Great Verve sound although it is a little different hearing Ella with  an orchestra as opposed to a jazz or swing band. Not bad mind you, just different.

That's one of the few Nelson Riddle recordings that I like.  Usually I find his arrangements sappy.  Ella makes nearly anyone sound good.

Scored a bunch of vintage Vanguard folk LPs at the thrift shop.  :thumb:

My kids have nicknamed this thrift shop "The Crack House" because of my addictive compulsion to stop there several times a week just to see what might have come in.

Joan Baez: Joan

Joan Baez: Farewell Angelina

I just heard this track on Pandora  "There is No Greater Love" with a trumpet solo by what sounded like a 1950s Miles Davis. It is a modern recording, so I was curious. Wallace Roney maybe? no, too clean and authentic. Turns out it's this:

Jimmy Bruno - "Like That"  1996

Joey DeFrancesco  - organ and trumpet!   I never knew he played trumpet! Pretty good too, sounded just like Miles. Not surprising since Miles had such an impact on his career.

My younger son Bobby brought a friend home tonight who was a) an avid Beatles fan and B) had never heard "a really good record player" before.  I quickly put 2 and 2 together and decided it was time to take out the Mobile Fidelity Sgt. Pepper UHQR and give it a whirl.

Well we weren't 5 bars into the first song before Bobby was looking at me and mouthing  :wtf:?

He had often heard me talk about lousy summer electricity but this is the first time he had heard the effect for himself. I explained to him that his mother (and everybody else in the neighborhood )  had the air conditioners cranking at full blast and this was the sonic result of all that noise on the lines.  :(

Although his friend was blown away by it, we both know that it could have sounded much better.

Another lesson for the youngin' from the audiophile school of hard knocks.

Victory at Sea (German Teldec LP pressing)

I already own the MoFi 3 LP set, but I couldn't resist picking this up. There is something just perversely ironic about a German pressing of music celebrating American battle successes in WWII.
