"I'm a melancholy man, that's what I am,
All the world surrounds me, and my feet are on the ground.
I'm a very lonely man, doing what I can,
All the world astounds me and I think I understand
That we're going to keep growing, wait and see."
The album and this song in particular have been in my head since 1970.
When lyrics and melody become one.

Don

This shows how personal the appeal of lyrics can be.  I used to listen to the Moody Blues incessantly, yet these lyrics never made an impact on me. In fact, I had to look them up.

I guess your right.
I've never had a melody stuck in a Mobius strip
in my head all day. (Except Frankenstein, oh crap)

I think I'm in Rollo's camp. I find that certain genres like Folk, country, Bob Dylan ;), lyrics seem to be the focal point. On the other hand some of my favorite music, classic rock, R&B, and soul/funk, the music has got to be the "hook". Hell, I couldn't make out most of the lyrics listening to an AM radio with a little speaker!

I’m with you on making out some of the lyrics. Forgot the song today, but the one word could only be one of two things….. fortunately, the dj commented on it. Didn’t affect me appreciating the melody, though 🎶🎶
