Bulk Cable for DIY Headphone cables???
« on: April 12, 2013, 12:59:26 PM »
I'm toying around with recabling my newly acquired VModa m-80 headphones... has anyone made DIY headphone cables? Any suggestions on what to use? I'm debating between the following:

Mogami W2893
http://www.redco.com/Mogami-W2893.html

and

Mogami W3106
http://www.redco.com/Mogami-W3106.html

I'm wondering if the latter is going to be too big and/or heavy for the headphones, let alone fitting into a mini stereo connector.

Speaking of which... any suggestions for a connector?

Is the Canare F12 a decent option?

Regards,
Dave

Been reading about a number of people who can't stand the F12s... from what I've read (in case anyone is interested), these ViaBlue 3.5mm plugs are nice, sturdy and easy to work with...

Current in a headphone cable is very very low, so you don't need anything big gage. I would avoid any kind of shielding. Pro audio levels of shielding (as in bulk mic cable) will definitely remove detail through added capacitance.

Did you see this stuff?

Even a jaded cable lover like me was a bit shocked to see prices like that.

Vovox makes probably the best sounding mic cables in the pro audio market, silver plated copper, unshielded, natural fiber insulators. They have an audiophile mentality, but are selling to pro audio which keeps the prices low from our perspective. Sonorus is their top balanced wire. Only available as finishedd cables with connectors, made in Switzerland.

I used this cable to make an extension for my Senn HD600's based on some recommendation somewhere long ago. Canare L-4E6S + some connectors from Partsconnexion or PartsExpress.

Worked out very nicely. Ideally I would like one complete length of cable rather than making another 10' extension, but this worked out very well indeed and headphones are an occasional thing, so no rush to do otherwise right now.

Laugh and the world laughs with you. Cry and you'll have to blow your nose.
