San Fran's Mahler Cycle
« on: April 07, 2010, 04:54:07 PM »
http://www.shopsfsymphony.org/shop/product.php?productid=1510&cat=22&page=1

3 Grammys in 2010 for this 8th Symphony. Conductor Michael Tilson Thomas has been working his way through these Mahler Symphonies for what seems like a decade. Many of them have won lavish praise. I think this is the last one. I have not heard any of them yet, still working off Tyson's fine Mahler recco on EMI.  But SF Symphony's Prokofiev Romeo and Juliet is my most treasured disk of music and recording quality. They can really wail, and the recording is perfect, but not audiophile hyped space like Ref Recordings.

Anyway, they are having a rare "10% off and free shipping" sale until April 15th. These are not sold in stores, direct from symphony only.

Nice idea, but I don't think I like Mahler $750 worth.

Do you think Mahler will fetch that much?

The cashier will ask you, "Did you ever hear this stuff?" "OK, just checkin."

Well, a 2 or 3 record set they usually let out the door for the same 69 cent price, but I think they might jack the price up a little bit on a 22 LP set.  :(

Woooo - $750 clams, kinda pricey. I just heard the 5th live, started a thread on AC asking for folks favorite versions of it.

What are folks thoughts here.

Is the SACD version on Arkimusic worth the $25?

The San Fransisco Orchestra is awesome, one of the best in the country. And the recordings are close to perfect. Thomas is a good conductor, and the performances are highly regarded. I'd like to get the cycle sometime, but I'm happy with the one I have.

Tyson on AC recommended the Gary Bertini cycle of Mahler, I really like that one. It is smart, exciting and clean recordings.

I also have Bernstein's NYP 5th which I listen to the most because it's in the car. Of course that is great for the Bernstein.

It sounds like a lot but it is really not all that off the mark. 750divided by 22 LPs comes out to $34 a record which is right in the ballpark for 180g LPs these days. Of course it is a lot to lay out in one chunk for a bunch of records, but that is a different story.

Great thread.  I just ordered the 2nd Symphony.  I can't say that I get excited by vinyl releases from DSD sources.  Now if this cycle was originally recorded on 35mm magnetic film or half inch tape then I would be standing in line for the vinyl.

I was fortunate to be in the audience for the performance of Mahler's Fifth, as performed by the SF Symphony & conducted by MTT. I haven't a clue whether it's the performance that is included in the recorded cycle, but the timeline certainly seems right. It was quite a night - String
