I was reading an interview with Herbie Hancock he said when this 2nd quintet was first formed, the young guys immediately began jamming by throwing out new chords and riffs while Miles listened. But he couldn't keep up and looked concerned.
The 2nd day he matched them as they jammed, following along each new avenue the new guys went down.
And the 3rd day, he led them down the new avenues, and the 'young bucks' now had to struggle to keep up.
That's talent, wish I had some.
And now, sitting in dealership service waiting area - ESP.
Four and More / My Funny Valentine albums were from same concert, the first recordings of the new band. Tony Williams was recruited from Jackie McLean only days before.
It always amazes me the way those guys could just sit down and just wing it with little or no formal rehearsal.
