Coleman Hawkins: Commodore Classics in Jazz

Commodore LP

OK this is more like it. A collection of music sourced from 1030s and 40s 78s, so the sound is not audiophile in nature, but what it lacks in SQ it makes up for in great music and performance.

Although the typical 1940s sound is limited in terms of frequency response and dynamics, it is still not what I would consider "bad" sound and it is enjoyable for what it is.

Pink Floyd: Dark Side of the Moon

MoFi Gold CD & 16/44 FLAC sourced from the same CD

There was a definite difference in SQ between the two. The FLAC definitely had a much clearer sense of space and a larger soundstage that had a much better layering of depth. The CD was a bit smoother, but at the same time a little less detailed. If I had to pick one I would say that I preferred the FLAC, although I could easily be happy with either one. Although I would be interested in hearing what the CD sounds like on a better transport.

Just for the record, neither was as good as my 30th Anniversary LP.

This used to be a very active and vibrant thread with tons of good information being passed back and forth about good music and recordings. But lately it has turned into a dead end and  lead by a one man band, me. I have been going weeks and weeks putting up dozens of posts with no comments on them or any contributions form anyone else. It just seems like nobody here cares any more about sharing insights and experiences about music. And if that's the way the group feels, so be it.

With all of that in mind I am going to take a break from posting in this thread. No hard feelings and I will continue hanging around and participating in other discussions. But as far as this thread goes, it seems like a waste time searching down pictures of album covers and formatting posts when I just end up talking to myself.

Howdy Tmazz. I understand your view. All I can say is I enjoy this thread, which of late, as you say, is made up of your postings. It's interesting to see different people's taste in music. Suppose I am but a music voyeur to this thread (ha!) as I have had nothing in the way of comments. Also, my system, more or less is down. Moral: I have enjoyed your postings here.

Man, I get it!  It often can be an exercise in navel gazing with a topic like this.  I want to say that I have found so much great music by tuning in to see what you post!  A lot of great resources in the chain.

Thank you for all of this.  Time for the rest of us to step up.

You rock!

OK, based on these last few posts and some further comments I got via phone calls and PMs  I guess there are people paying attention and I will return to posting here.

But seriously guys comments in this thread can be short and sweet  saying that you tried the album and liked it  (streaming is a great way to sample things you see here, or even just a :thumb: to say you like that music or artist.

The posts don't have to be elaborate, but any acknowledgement at all will at least let me and anyone else who posts here know that people are at least paying attention.

Of course in my mind the best kind of follow-up post is one that says "if you liked that you might want to check out this......."

In my mind the best part of this thread is learning from other people's musical experience and using those hints to broaden my own musical horizons and enjoyment.   :thumb:

Because in the end, although we all like to play with gear, isn't the bottom like of this hobby the enjoyment of music in the home?

Sometimes you pick an album to play and others times they seem to pick you.

I still have a pile of records and CDs in the basement that I picked up over the past few months that have not gotten their inaugural spin yet.

I came home tonight, like so many other people in the world, still a bit in shock over the fire at Notre Dame and just went to "the pile to clean a few LPs and sit down for a listen. And what is the second LP on the pile but this:

Cantate Domino

Propruis LP (White cover Swedish pressing)

Between the spire on the cover and the pipe organ and choir in a big open space this one just had to be played tonight.
