I have a Luxman L-590AX MKII, and I was listening to Triumvirat's 'Spartacus' cd. It is rather thin sounding, so I hit the loudness button. So much more enjoyable. There, I said it. I was fervently attached to the 'Line Straight' setting on my amp. But my audiophile street cred is now shot.
Maybe even worse, I flipped the -2db switch on the back of my Legacy Focus SE's, and I'm enjoying the slight reduction.
These were separate incidents, unrelated to one another.
I feel better having told someone out there.
Thank you...

Well, you have really crossed the line. The purist part of me is outraged.
I hope you really enjoy what you've done  :thumb:

Hi. My name is Bob.
I use tone controls.
Bob.
-
Thank you all for your kind words. The guilt and angst are still within me though, therefore I pledge to use the tone controls judiciously. Only when absolutely necessary.
I probably shouldn't say this, but I'm getting a turntable soon, and my amp also has a subsonic filter. And I may use it.
Too much, too soon?

Push forward James. Just let it happen. Relax and close your eyes if it helps.
-
Too much, too soon?
Remember James, it's the cover-up, not the crime.

"One still needs tone controls for serious listening" - says no greater authority than Floyd Toole himself, the patron saint of audio technique, just 3 weeks ago! I think that means you're absolved!

I came up with a great idea that works:
If I want more bass, I turn the sub up.
If I want less bass, I turn the sub down.
-
What if you want less treble? ;)

What if you want less treble? ;)
Why, new cables, of course! ;)
And when that doesn't work, try the old "tissue paper over the tweeter" trick...

 True on both counts!

Use a pair of these.

It's ok since they don't say "treble", they say "attenuator" instead.
"Audiophile approved".

So are you saying all attenuators are created equal or you can't hear the difference? :-P
-
Ouch. No, just that it's ok as long as it doesn't say "bass" or "treble". ;)

Hi Bob,
Depending upon how much highs one wishes to rid of, a little zobel across the speaker terminals might do the trick. It will take some time to figure out the proper R and C values.
Cheers
