Budget Whole House Audio
« on: March 21, 2007, 05:43:23 AM »
What are some good sounding cheap outdoor speakers? Indoor ceiling speakers? Also cheap multichannel amp for whole house audio distribution? The opposite of Crestron is what I'm looking for. For sound on porch, garage, bathroom, etc.

I have a 20 year old small boombox with 3 inch speakers that a friend bought for me for $10. That sound quality is good enough for this purpose, but I don't like hauling it around and plugging it in all the time.

Thanks!
Rich

For a cheap whole house system, I use a behringer A500 amp
http://www.partsexpress.com/pe/showdetl.cfm?&Partnumber=248-749
and impedance matched volume controls
http://www.partsexpress.com/pe/showdetl.cfm?&Partnumber=300-548
or this if you dont want volume control in each room
http://www.partsexpress.com/pe/showdetl.cfm?&Partnumber=300-610
This is really nice, amps in the volume controls, all wiring done with cat5, and remote control from any room
http://www.partsexpress.com/pe/pshowdetl.cfm?&Partnumber=183-230&CFID=9471248&CFTOKEN=53583693

Just remember, if using one amp to run several pairs of speakers to use impedance matching volume controls. If your happy with 3" boombox speakers buy the cheapest you can find. Most any in wall or mount on wall will be better than that.

If you want decent sound without breaking the bank, look at the following lines for outdoor speakers:

http://www.axiomaudio.com/outdoor_speakers.html

I have owned a lot of Axiom speakers in my day and they turned out not to be my thing but they should work fine given what your looking for.

http://www.monitoraudio.co.uk/product.php?application=6&product=62

The Monitors will cost you a little more but they are an excellent speaker. I have a set and everybody who gets near my deck comments on how good they sound.

As for your porch, garage, bathroom etc, look at what the guys above offer for in walls as both make them.

Thanks for the info and the bump on this one. I have not done anything, and this was a request from the little lady who wants music on the porch! I should encourage the wife spending money on audio, get a new habit going...

Take a listen to mine sometime... They're 'osdaudio' speakers... maybe $120 or so?  I'll dig up the link if you'd like.

I really enjoy listening to music.
