Title: Free Qobuz 3-Month Trial
Post by: shadowlight on September 15, 2018, 05:27:10 PM
In case anyone here wants to try Qobuz for free.  You can now register for streaming in US using "CEDIA2018" code.  The code was posted on Roon's forum.  Gives you access to Sublime+ subscription which includes 24bit 192Khz streaming for albums that are available in that format.  For the Roon users integration between Roon and Qobuz is likely to occur before end of the year according to https://parttimeaudiophile.com/2018/09/08/cedia-2018-qobuz-usa-launch-roon/

Once registered go under your profile and select "I have a gift code"

Thanks for the tip Deepak!

How do you play Qobuz before Roon integration starts? Does it have its own app? (duh, it must,...)

btw Do you or anybody ever experience the Tidal delay between pressing play and when the song starts, 5-10, even 20 second delay? Tidal has admitted buffering problems which I don't expect to ever be fixed. But I am wondering if anyone else here has similar experience. Only a few have complained on Roon forum about it.

Couple of ways to play.  It has desktop application for both Windows and MacOS.  If your DAC is connected directly to a UPnP Renderer you have couple of options - BubbleUPnP and mConnect under Android and mConnect under iOS.

If your DAC is connected directly to one of the streamers like Aurender, Lumin, Auralic, etc you should be able to leverage the native apps for those devices to play Qobuz.

On mobile devices you can stream using Chromecast or Airplay (I think that is the equivalent service for Apple devices).

No recent experience with Tidal.  I moved away from Tidal over to Deezer couple months ago.  I am trying Qobuz right now.

You can convert your Tidal / Spotify / Deezer / Apple / Pandora playlist using services provided by Soundiiz (https://soundiiz.com/).

Edit: Forgot to mention Bluesound Node also supports Qobuz (I know couple of folks on AN use that for Tidal)

Yes, it’s a frequent occurrence. I’ve gotten used to it.

Nice find, Shadowlight
Never had a buffering proplem with Tidal but then again I have it hardwired.

What i did find a bit annoying with Tidal was that I wasn't able to save entire albums to my favorites but only individual songs.
What did piss me off was my entire favorites was mysteriously wiped clean.
Wo was me

How is Qobuz comparing to deezer?

Thanks for all the good info!

Qobuz.com says it's not available in my country. :(  But I assume it is available in your country... ;)

I use a sms200 which hosts a BubbleUpnp server. Are you saying can I use Qobuz windows app to beam obuz stream to my Upnp server? And same with some other Android Upnp app on my phone can play Qobuz to Upnp also?

Ever try foobar2000 as UPnP client? I think of it as a file player, but can it control internet streams like Qobuz?
Thanks,
UPnpNoob

I have not been able to do a apples to apples comparison of the sound quality, since I use HQPlayer.  With Deezer I have to use Chromecast SPDIF connected to SPDIF to USB converter to get the music to HQP, while for Qobuz I can use any of the UPnP clients like BubbleUPnP and/or mConnect.

Both have large selection of music that I like to listen to World, Jazz, 80's/90's music, Blues, Big band and some classical (just trying it out since Qobuz has such a vast collection).  To my ears Qobuz sounds slightly better but I am not sure how much of the that is due to me using Chromecast for Deezer.

The one advantage that Deezer has over Qobuz is how it works with my listening pattern better.  Deezer has what they call flow which is based around your favorites and you created playlist.  They will play similar songs from their catalog.  The downside for Deezer which is huge is that they make it very difficult to integrate with your two channel setup.  All of the devices that support Hifi are more consumer based (Alexa, Google Home, Yamaha, Sony receivers, etc).  I have been bugging them to make their API's for hifi available for folks to write additional software but so far no such luck.  None of the mobile clients have hifi support so the only way to listen to hifi for Deezer is if you use their desktop application which is in beta state or you use one of the consumer product which do not integrate that well with my setup.

Qobuz is completely opposite to Deezer.  All of their API's are published and anyone can write the front end to access their catalog, which helps with integration.  You have just about any streamer out their that has built in client for Qobuz regardless of the cost associated with the streamer, from lowly Logitech Media Server with Touch or Rpi running LMS to Bluesound, Aurender, Lumin, Auralic, Devialet (sp?), etc.  That options makes it very easy to integrate in your main rig setup.  Since, I was already using BubbleUPnP and HQPlayer Embedded as UPnP renderer, it literally took me 15 seconds to get Qobuz up and running.  All, I needed to do was enter my account information for Qobuz in BubbleUPnP and I was up and running.  The other advantage that Qobuz has is if you like an album you can purchase it as flac file at discounted pricing depending on the subscription tier.  For example, one of the album that Tom had posted in the what are you listening to thread was "Love Is Here to Stay by Tony Bennett and Diana Krall" you can purchase that album in 24bit 96kHz format for 10 Great Britian Pounds or Rimsky-Kosakov Scheherazade, Op. 35 for 10 GBP.  The only reason for the GBP is due to my account being tied to UK based services.  My assumption is that pricing will be similar in dollars once it is officially rolled out, since I have seen similar pricing for Euro.

I have been in communication with David Solomon who is one of the main guy trying to get Qobuz deployed in US (same guy who provided the license for the Oct. 27th event) and they plan to add the Deezer type of "flow" functionality in the future once they have US rollout completed.

So what I am doing is I listen to Deezer on the phone leveraging flow and add any song that I like to a playlist, convert that playlist to Qobuz using Soundiiz, which helps me around the flow issue and listen to the same music in the basement.  If Deezer does not release the API or start integrating better with streamers I will most likely not renew my subscription once it is up for renewal.  If they do I might keep both, since there are instances where one service has.

For folks who have Bluesound you guys might be in the best position to do a head to head sound comparision, since all three service is supported on the device.  If Bluesound allowed me to send the stream to UPnP renderer I would purchase it in a heart beat, just so I can integrate with HQPe better for both Deezer and Qobuz.

Sorry, for the lengthy rambling post.

Couple of folks posted on the Roon forum that the code worked for them.  Could it have expired  :duh

I will reach out to David @ Qobuz to see if he is willing to provide eval codes.

Rich, I will drop email message to David @ Qobuz to see if he can provide us with eval code to try.

If your SMS200 is hosting BubbleUPnP server you are most likely using the Lumin app on your phone.  If that is the case yes, you can configure Lumin app to send the stream to UPnP renderer.  The answer to your question about Android UPnP app sending the stream is correct.  I have tested both BubbleUPnP and mConnect app under Android and mConnect on iOS devices.

I have not tried foobar but if it has plugin to integrate with Qobuz you should be able to stream to any UPnP streamer.  Currently, UPnP support under Qobuz desktop app is unstable so I would not rely on it, but the Android and iOS devices with UPnP controller work just fine.

Email message sent.  Since Qobuz, is the official streaming provider for RMAF, CAF and NY Audio Show we might see similar codes to CEDIA in couple of weeks around the show timeframe.

I tried signing up twice on my iPad and am stuck in a loop. Their “try for free” sometimes leads to a page in French showing Euro prices. It’s not worth any further hassle. Those that can sign up, pls let us know how you like it.

I'm hoping since they're headline sponsors for RMAF this year, they make a big splash with free (US) trials there. Roon integration is also a must for me.

Sorry, you are having so much trouble Nick.  When I tried it from the browser it always took me to Great Britan's website with a popup saying Qobuz isn't available in your country and the URL that was displayed was https://www.qobuz.com/gb-en/close/us-en.  If I changed it to https://www.qobuz.com/gb-en/ which gave me the option to sign up on the top right hand corner.

I should have posted that information.  Sorry about that.

I am assuming that we are likely to see similar codes for RMAF, Capital Audiofest and NY Audio Show also, since they are listed as the official streaming partner for all 3 shows.  I believe a lot of people are waiting for the Roon integration before they will try Qobuz.  According to the article on Parttimeaudiophile (https://parttimeaudiophile.com/2018/09/08/cedia-2018-qobuz-usa-launch-roon/) Roon support is coming fall.

If you already have an account, just signin with the existing account.  Go under your account and select "My Profile", check the "I have a gift code" enter code and you should be all set, hopefully.  Qobuz seems to be doing a lot of infrastructure updates recently so occasionally you are likely to see "Internal error 500 messages".  I have run into that only once over the last 3 or so weeks that I have been using Qobuz.  My current assumption is that they are putting the infrastructure in place for US roll out.  I wish they would put up an announcement about when they are doing the upgrades so folks do not panic.  It kind of leaves a bad impression if you are trying to roll it out and have people interested in their service.

The "Official Qobuz Issues Thread (https://www.computeraudiophile.com/forums/topic/46611-official-qobuz-issues-thread/)" have two Qobuz employees actively participating and accepting users feedback.  David Craff is listed as Product Manager for Qobuz under Linkedin and David Solomon is listed as "David.. Qobuz, Hi-Res Music Evangelist".

I was able to sign up for an account via this qb-en URL and used the CEDIA2018 code for a 3 month trial.  Didn't even need to enter payment information.

But, the site does show me in United Kingdom and will not let me change that.    Still, good opportunity to play with it.  It will be very interesting to see how (and when) Roon integrates Qobuz.

Glad someone else were able to register with the code.  For now your account is going to stay in UK but my understanding based on other forums is the accounts are going to be converted to US once it is officially available in US.  The big question is going to are all you favorites in UK have the same content licensing agreements in place.

D, after I  sign in and then go to profile, the next webpage is suddenly in French. I clicked on a few buttons, but no luck. Maybe the issue is simply where the Quobuz server is on the west coast....I’m in Utah. Using the app itself puts me in a loop advising a free trial is unavailable.  Thanks anyway

Ok, I am confused.  Are you saying that you have not entered the CEDIA2018 code at all?  If that is the case use a regular browser to connect to the link from couple of post ago and start there.  Once you have confirmation that account is setup for 3 month trial, enter the same email and password that you used via the browser for the iPad Qobuz application.

It's difficult for me to read the tiny fonts even with my reading glasses on the tablet so I leverage the computer to do all the initial setup, which leaves entering credentials on the tablet when needed.  I can blow the credential window up so I can read it.

1) I have entered the code on the Chrome browser as you suggested and it worked...and did a nice job on the French translation. While the Quobuz web player in the Chrome browser downloads and plays, I get no volume through my iPad
2) I have installed the app twice, meaning two separate user names, and there is no place to enter the
Cedia code. I have uninstalled and reinstalled the app a couple of times. It keeps showing an icon for a free trial, but when I tap on it, it says no free trials are available and to try again later.
3) If I tap on the “later” word, another page opens up and I can only play samples of music. The samples play fine, but that’s all I get. There is nowhere on the app that plays samples where I can find either my profile or any location where I could enter the Cedia code.
4) I may play with the glitchy Auralic at some point

Thx

I have 3 more codes for 2-month trial, that I picked up @ NY Audio Show today.  They are going to be available until end of day next Saturday.  If they are not claimed I will pass it along to the local audio society members  :thumb:

For folks who were waiting for Qobuz integration with Roon.  Roon release 1.6 now includes support for Qobuz.

I believe you have both Tidal and Qobuz and, if so, pls compare if you have time

Qobuz is a cluster fuck right now . I realize it's beta but....
Lots of it not working.  Compared to Spotify it's louder just like Tidal.
Making it tough to compare. Very limited library. They got work to do.
We'll see, if I keep it or just go to Tidal ( cheaper) or stay with Spotify.
I only stream for new music.

I've been using Qobuz beta for about 3 weeks now.   I primarily use it through Roon and I have to say I'm quite impressed.   Sure, they've still got some kinks to work out but I'm pretty happy with it.  Of course, I liked Tidal integration with Roon as well but eventually stopped that service.   Time will tell if I stick with Qobuz, but I do love how it's integrated with Roon and I'm extremely happy with Roon.

It must be a small subset of the library just for the US Beta. I got a trial account at the audio shows this fall. That trial is a full working account on the British site and the library available to me is much better that what I can get in Tidal. Perhaps it is limited because they still have not worked out US licensing rights, which is I suspect why the US launch has been pushed out in the first place.

My concern with streaming is sound quality. Does Qobuz upsample 44.1 to 24/192 ? Has anyone directly compared to a CD played with dedicated transport ? Or compared to a ripped CD to a server. The only thing I stream is WBGO and WQXR and sound is good but not like a CD.

Qobuz streams on what ever the native resolution that they get from the labels.  If they got redbook you get redbook, if the original is 24/96 you get 24/96.  If they received 24/96 and your subscription is only for redbook they downgrade the original to redbook using dbpoweramp.

Edit: Charles, you can sign up for free trial for both Tidal and Qobuz.  You can compare it on your own and make a decision if it is something that works for you or not  :thumb:

Interface much better today at launch.
Library opens up.
As you say they stream whatever native resolution they get from the labels.
I'm cheap so I am in the HiFi kevel.
It sounds good but not as good s my CD trans DAC level.
More listening to be continued.

I think you hit the nail right on the head. Its good, but not as good as the best possible sources. But it is good enough to provide me with significant musical enjoyments, especially given the fact it allows me to have access at my fingertips of all kinds of music that I otherwise would not be able to try without buying it blindly. That to me is on its own enough reason to subscribe.

But certain;y when I do find an album that really speaks to me I will search it out on the best possible physical medium, which in my house usually ends up being vinyl.

I don't know of many people who would be inclined to get rid of their record and/or CD collections just because Qobuz was around, but the service sure makes a great overlay on top of you existing physical collection.  :thumb:

Let the games begin!!!   :dj:

There is a big improvement in SQ going from HiFi to Studio plans. That said, I do find that HiRes files played locally sound better. However, no complaints here I can live with the SQ and the ability to expand my musical horizons  :-P

Just dumped it, not worth the extra$$.
Might go back later when more organized.
May also try "god forbid" Tidal again.
I should leave well enough alone. :duh
