Aging Ears or Shot Ears or Both ??
« on: March 12, 2018, 08:22:53 AM »
Is it me or is it bright. I'm noticing that systems of most Men over 65 especially ones who played in band for some time are just bright and played to loud.
  What? turn up the volume.

Unlike the rest of me, my ears are still quite excellent. While I do crank ‘em up for ZZ Top or some Stones, it’s limited to that. Wonder where my hearing would be if is was in a rock band touring for 20 years....

Most of us have hearling loss; it's just a question of to what degree.  But even those of us with substantial loss can still train ourselves to listen for particular things within our limited range.  Instrument detail and placement, no problem.  Soundstage depth and width gets a bit more problematic as we lose frequencies above 4-5Khz.

I’ve often thought that there must be some audiologists with equipment that travels. Think of senior care facilities, hospitals, etc... I’m sure there would be some willing to travel to an audio club meeting to gauge/test/dispel our thoughts on our hearing ability. Of course at 58 mine is still as good as it was at 10 years old, but for all the others, it seems it might be a worthwhile endeavor.

It would require a mobile testing booth that could reduce the noise outside the booth sufficiently to allow adequate isolation for you to attempt to test your hearing threshold for the test frequencies. It would add a lot of expense to testing.

Testing your hearing is all well and good, but how often have we said that the goal of a good high end system is to a closely as possible recreate the experience of hearing a live performance? Well if you really take that philosophy to heart your own hearing should not be that big of an issue. Your personal listening experience would is a product of your own ears. What you hear live would be filtered through  whatever hearing ability you have (or don't have.) Since you would be listening with the same ears in the live and home listening situations what your particular hearing curve is should not be an issues since it would effect your perception of the music equally in both situations.

I have hearing loss and wear aids, my audiologist says theres a difference between understanding speech and listening to music and audiophiles ears are trained and we dont have as many issues with music. I may misunderstand someone but I can hear minute sounds when playing music.

Hi all,

Just want to share something about earing aid.
Well, up to now (71 years old) I still consider myself luck not to need an earing aid.
However, two years ago I bought a signal generator to test - evaluate mys system
performances...
I found out that my earing is limited to about 8 to 10KHz.
The low end is almost 20 Hz of course, I have to increase the level to hear it.
(For the low end, I've used the GR Research V1 that I own and like.
That's it and that's all.

It's been a few years since my hearing was tested, but it was done with, closed back, over the ear, headphones. So no super special room would be needed.

I was a administrator at a university with a audiology department a floor about me. I got asked to take the test a few times. Gave students someone to test. I was in my 30's. Most of the charts I saw including mine were far from flat response. Many people in audio quote how high up the scale they can still hear. That does not tell much about how good hearing is.

Next year I’ll likely have another hearing test.  I recall seeing the charts and noticing the deviation from a flat response. How that correlates to normal or normal for my age, I have no idea.
