Title: Windows 10
Post by: richidoo on October 01, 2014, 05:40:20 PM
Windows 9 will be named Windows 10.

Why is this?

Was Windows 8 so bad that they needed even more distance from it by skipping a version number?

Weird... especially when Windows 10 looks like a really good version of Windows 8.1.

Edit:
Windows 7 and 8 were both very good improvements for audiophiles.  What is new about Windows 9 10 that will be of interest to audiophiles?

Has it been long enough since the release of Windows 8 to have any significant audio related upgrades?

Maybe Microsoft thinks "Windows 9" would sound "inadequate" compared to Apple's OS 10.

They are thinking, "we can go to 10 just like them."

Yeah, but can yours go to 11?

There are direct links to the x86 and x64 iso files in the comments section of this article. Burn them to a CD/DVD to make an installation disk.

I setup a windows 64 bit pro on an older laptop to see if if sounds good using my LH Labs geek Out 1000 through the Sennheiser HD650 Cans with my better cable.

The laptop is setup with a nice SSD installed by be as well as a USB 3.0 Express card in the slot. I optimized the OS and software. I use an external HD connected t o the USB 3.0 port of the express 54 MM card and the Geek Out is connected to a USB 2.0 port.

The final results are in, this sounds very good and I am uisng a 2010 Corporate type laptop.

Cool, thanks Lizard King. How did you optimize the OS for audio? Any tweaks you care to share?

Did you disable the Win10 'spying' functions?

If you use a laptop, do NOT use one with a touch screen as they emit a lot of RF noise.

Replace the SAT HDD with A SSD drive. Install the windows 10 OS and the player of your choice, IE J. River Media Center. Run the Audio for your Dac in WASAPI mode.

Disable system Restore and also disable the swap file. Disable indexing, write caching and prefecth/superfecth.

Download and install Fidelizer and run it in extremist mode.

Always keep your music files on an external HDD. If you have a mac laptop, use teh thunderbolt inferace. If you are on windows, connect the HDD with a  good USB 3.0 cable and connect the Dac to a USB 2.0 cable. Cables do make a big difference.

Upgrade your RAM to 8.0 GB.

If all this has been done, in J River, make sure you load songs into memory and give it exclusive access.

Let me know how it goes.

Not computer savvy so how would you do this ?

Thanks Liz.

What about JPlay, does it do a lot of that streamlining of the PC? But not free.

I'm liking the idea of linux more and more. It can't be THAT hard? Cheap enough to try and throw away if I'm too old for it.  :-P

I have tried Linux and there is only one player out there that I would suggest called HQ Player desktop yet it is costly.

I went over to another audiophile club members home tonight who I have mentored about computer audio. He uses Jplay yet he has so many problems with it. We ran an old version of fildelizer and we could clearly hear the organ and vocals better in Julsang on Cantate domino (proprius).

I upgraded his fidelizer yet we had to call it a night.  He uses an older version of Jriver because jplay is not compatible with JRMC 20.

Also I noticed that Jplay was setup to use ASIO which is old and back from the windows xp days.

Running fidelizer, I was able to set JRMC to use WASAPI and connect to his external dac.

I am apprehensive about telling someone who does not what what they do in fear of being liable.

Thanks for the additional info Liz

Evan You can google those for what they are and how to shut off. They are basically windows background functions for speed and reliability. You don't need them when playing tunes, a very simple task. The reduced activity benefits SQ. But if you use the PC for other tasks you may not want to disable them. If kids touch it leave restore on. Write down what you do so it's easy to undo.

Windows 10 is great. I use VLC media player. It's free and has a wealth of features. I cannot imagine how JPlay or anything else could be any "better" in terms of what can actually be heard, although I am tempted to download/install the trial to listen.

Jplay makes a big improvement.  You can even hear differences between the different modes

Don't listen to the Liz, Fidelizer blows

I had a dialog with the developers of both apps and JPLay does more streaming and shuts down more services than Fidelizer
