Question (actually two) regarding the digital cable:

1) Is this a 75-ohm design?

2) Can it be made with a BNC on one end, or only RCA?

Thanks....

Hi Richard
I will email Grover that we are doing the second round now so he can nose in on us once in a while, but in the meantime, contact him directly for specific answers.

groverhuffman@hotmail.com

You will need to get custom price from him anyway. Make sure it is OK to do a special order in the group buy. If you would like to listen to my RCA ICs in your system, let me know.

The digital cable is a 75 ohm design, and can be made with BNC for an extra charge.

I'll go for a special RCA to XLR cable this time.
Just emailed Grover to ask.

BTW, I'm very happy with his RCA cable in my tubed setup, but when I tried them between my SS processor and amplifier sound went a bit edgy on the top end. Though, I must confess I haven't put on them more then 15 hours yet, so it's probably too early to say...

Should do so later tonight.

Grover,

Are your balanced interconnects truly balanced (signal +, signal -, and ground) or do you simply attach an XLR connector to what is otherwise a single-ended IC?

The question was raised in the first group buy thread, but I don't recall it being addressed.

Thanks.

Hi everyone, My balanced cables are custom balanced cables.
Title: Re: Grover Huffman Cables Group Buy - Round 2
Post by: Double Ugly on June 24, 2007, 05:15:18 PM
Hi everyone, My balanced cables are custom balanced cables.

That's a response, but it doesn't answer the question.  I can strip a power cord from a lamp, put XLR connectors on it and call it a "custom balanced cable", but my saying so doesn't make it true.

Here's a definition of "Balanced" (as it applies to interconnects ) from The Recording Website (http://www.recordingwebsite.com/articles/cables.php) -

"Balanced cables have 2 audio conduction wires and one ground wire.  What happens here is that the audio information starts at the connector and is split down both the high and low wires 180 degrees out of phase from each other.  Then the audio on both wires is summed up again at your console or gear by a balancing circuit."

And here's one from our friends at Audioholics (http://www.audioholics.com/education/cables/balanced-vs-unbalanced-interconnects/balanced-vs-unbalanced-interconnects-page-2) -

"In a balanced interconnect system both of the signal conductors have an equal, and non-zero, impedance to ground.  Therefore, three conductors are required, signal+, signal-, and ground or shield."

As you can see, different verbiage was used, but the definitions agree.  That being the case, will you now tell me - and others who may be interested - whether or not your "balanced" cables meet with the requirements set forth in the above definitions?

I'm not asking for trade secrets.  I just want to know whether or not I can in good conscience recommend your balanced cables.

Monitor Audio 9i's are one of my favorite speakers! I use to run 4 in a 5.1 setup before moving on to the GR's and then the GS60's. All very good speakers!  :D

I have owned the Monitor Audio 9is for approximately 3 to 4 years and used them for my main fronts in HT with a Monitor Audio Studio Series Center Channel.  I was totally happy with the speakers in HT driven by a Denon 3806 AVR.  Then one day my wife and I put in a CD and, well, the speakers were not dynamic, they actually sounded pretty bad.  I think I then started seriously browsing the HT sites on the web and somehow came across AudioCircle.  On the Circle I learned that the problem with my speakers was probably not the speakers but was the weak amp section in the Denon AVR.  Since then I have purchased 2 Odyssey Mono SEs, an Odyssey Candela, a Squeezebox 3, a linear Elpac Power Supply, had Wayne of Bolder do the Analog Mods with Platinum Caps to the S3 and mod the power supply and purchased SP Technology Timepiece 2.1s.  The Grovers will replace Bolder and Groneburg ICs.  Next purchase will be new speaker cables and then power cords (a friend has recommended Black Sands Power Cords and Straley Speaker Cables).  Oh, I forgot as I was collecting the pieces I "had" to purchase amps stands, speaker stands and racks from Core Furniture.  You know what, I be darn, the Monitor Audio 9is now sound so good for music (with the amps, preamps and Modded S3) I am becoming less annoyed at the long wait for the Timepieces.

Sorry, but just had to get the above off my chest!  I listen to the music and say to myself, damn that sounds great and then I think it should because I have the equivalent of the cost of a 200HP Outboard sitting in my living room.  Thinking of it in that way --- wish I could use it to catch a lunker!

Yes the balanced cables are true balanced cables in every way. They use silver connectors, 2 equal indentical signal conductors and a seperate ground. Is there anyone out there that makes balanced cables in any other way? The signal conductors and the ground conductor are  copper silver hybrids.
Title: Re: Grover Huffman Cables Group Buy - Round 2
Post by: Carlman on June 27, 2007, 09:15:40 AM
I thought the same thing, Grover.  How else could they be made?  The connectors are pretty straightforward... 3 pins, signals on one row and the ground on the second row...

Is there anyone out there that makes balanced cables in any other way?

Yes, there is.  You're naïve if you think you'd be the first manufacturer to try and pass off SE cables w/ XLR connectors as balanced cables.

That you ignored the first inquiry and offered nothing substantive in your initial response to the second did nothing to engender confidence in the construction of your cables.  Thank you for (finally) providing clarification.

Given how difficult it is for you to acknowledge me or my posts, would you prefer I stop recommending your cables?

Double Ugly, You have helped me. I'm not ignoring your posts, I'm just really busy, and don't read the forums that often. Please except my apologies. Please don't be mad. I personally do not know of any manufactures that pass off SE cables as Balanced. Why would they the cables would sound awful. You’re my friend.

Jim, given what has gone on in the past, I must say that I'm a little shocked you may be picking up a few pairs of Grover's ic's.

Whatever your reasons, good for you on putting what happened behind you or at the very least, looking the other way long enough to buy a few sets!

It's good to see so many noted phools commenting positively on Grover's cables.

I placed my order today and can't wait to see how the balanced XLR does in my system.  In the past I have used RCA Single ended cables that came recommended highly such as Chimera, Jaden, and Pulsars.  All great cables.

Hey Rich
I'm 99% sure I'll be buying at least 1 pair of 1.5 m single ended. Haven't emailed Grover yet, though. Was going to pick up another pair of I/C's from a European manufacturer, but their new prices floored me....
Oh well......

Hi Nick,

I haven't heard Grover's latest cable, and I don't know to which European manufacturer you're referring.  Even so, I'd be surprised if Grover's ICs aren't at least their equal.

Hi Jim
Based on most reports, my brief listening sessions and your good ears, getting the Grover's is quite the good deal. I'll "spill the beans" soon on the Euro company. Either I misread their pricing or they are way behind in keeping their prices current. I've sent a followup email to them and am hoping for a timely response.

Just put in an order for a couple pairs. I look forward to hearing them in my system, seems from comments in other threads that these will work well with Odyssey gear. It's also a plus that the reported burn-in time for these ICs is much more moderate than some other things I own.

Thanks to all for putting this opportunity together.

Interestingly enough, I ordered 2 pair tonight - one RCA, one XLR - to compare in my system.

While I'd love to compare an XLR version of my current favorite cable to the SE version I own, it isn't remotely economically feasibly.  I haven't heard the cable I ordered tonight, but if it's anything like the cable two (3?) versions ago, I have little doubt I'll be able to accurately determine whether or not balanced cables improve the sound.

I still have certain reservations, but none are related to the cables themselves.  They're excellent IMO, better than anything I've auditioned at 10x their price point.

Hi Jim
Well, the Euro manufacturer is Lessloss, the same folks that make the DAC 2004. It was my screwup on the I/C price. They list it per mono meter. Old price was 275 Euros a meter. I found their information on cable materials and geometry quite interesting. Whether it's true or not, I don't know. I was also quite curious about their PC, but that's 400 Euros for 2 meters.
They are very pleasant to deal with and quite prompt with replies to inquiries. Well, it gives me something to think about...

which I had sent him to audition and he was sending them back yesterday...

So he knows first hand how good they are...

May Grover get the group buy orders filled quickly...

Heard back from Grover just now. He anticipates completing and shipping the order by end of next week, about the same amount of time that the last order required. Let's give some leeway for the realities of life and call it two weeks to be safe. He is postponing his annual vacation to complete our order, so I thanked him for all of us. I guess I better order up some boxes!?!

Many thanks to Grover, you, et al. The update and sacrifices are much appreciated, sometimes it seems that doesn't happen very often in this world in which we live.

Are you kidding??? I'm the one who burned out his cdp! What advice? I only had them in place for about 50hrs before my disaster struck. I think the operative word is patience...I don't need to bring up a sensitive topic but the term "Nervosa" is frought with meaning! Want to talk about patience, cruise Dr. Xin's headphone forum (http://www.fixup.net/talk/forum.asp?FORUM_ID=4)...there are waits, and then there are waits. The current delivery time scenario for the group buy ICs is well within normal limits, IMO.

Grovers in da house! They arrived today in good shape. A set of SCs too. Very nice. I noticed something today when I looked over the new dark color flex. I always wondered how Grover printed the logo on the shrink wrap. He doesn't, each is hand signed.  8)

Any chance the the SCs could do a demo tour?

"Back in Black!"    Actually it is a very nice looking graphite, or carbon fiber kinda color, not pure black. It looks really cool.

SCs-anything's possible!  8)

Do you mean that these are a bit lighter in color than the previous black models?
Title: Re: Grover Huffman Cables Group Buy - Round 2
Post by: richidoo on August 17, 2007, 07:07:00 PM
I don't think I ever saw Grover's previous black wrapped ICs, only the white wrap with black or white shrink. But these aren't pure black, they are more translucent looking, more expensive looking than plain shiny black nylon techflex. They are like a dark gray, or graphite color. It doesn't show as well in that picture. The SCs are plain black, different color than the ICs.

I prefer the darker color anyway...the white would get dirty looking pretty quick.
I do hope the RCA connectors are more sturdy than the demo model..those looked like they would not hold up after some 25 plug-in and outs.

Looks like I'm going to have to wait before tearing down my system as I really want to hear these with the new setup.  There's still now way I'm going to have the amp fully broken in by the time the grovers arrive, but what the hey, there'll be a new pair of Reality SCs on the way next week too, and I do have a pre-cooked quad of Valve Art KT-88s I can throw in the amp that will give me a slightly better idea of the final voicing (maybe?).

The graphite will blend in with the rest of the setup too -- much more so than the white.

Looking forward to this!

Ummm...every 2-3 months(or shorter) I sometimes rotate different stuff in and out of the system, or just to dust/clean the components and shelves, so I figure that within a year or so all the cables would get plugged in/out about 25 times...but who knows, maybe the rca connectors are sturdier than they look....the SS Bullets certainly are.

Well going by the frequency of the improvements...by the time we receive our cables they might be outdated too...  :-k

Hi Guys, I think you'll like the improvements I've made to the RCA cables. The other cables have not changed. To receive the upgrade send the RCA cables you obtained though the 1st group buy to Grover Huffman, P.O. Box 4734, West Hills, CA. 91308. I will upgrade and return quickly. Please make sure your return address is legible.

Yes, at that time of the last round, the improvement was in the termination and did not affect the XLR cables (which I have).   I would be interested to know what's different about these new ones (other than color) relative to the all white ones.

Mine arrived this afternoon and I didn't waste any time putting the 1.5 meter pair between my 3910 and the Cayin.  Waahhhh hoooo!  Immediate and startling difference between them and the Anti-ICs they replaced.  Still a bit forward and edgy, but the overall tonal balance is vastly improved, as are macro and micro dynamics, better control in the bottom end and prat, prat, prat, like this system has just never had before.

I pulled out an old fave', Fleetwood Mac Rumors, and wow, what do you know -- they are actually in a recording booth, and you can hear all the subtle reverb in the vocals.  Ok, I started hearing that with the Antis, but now it was clear as day, and for the first time I could hear Lindsay Buckingham taking breaths between phrases in "Secobnd Hand News".  I really hope I can get enough time on them before it's time to take the whole system apart because at this point I'm very impressed (can you tell?) but I really want to hear how it all settles in.

At this point, if it never changes, it's ok, because I know a roll of the tubes can get it to just where I want it.

Thanks Rich, and thanks Grover!

Thanks, ustas 8)  but all credit goes to Grover this time. He bagged them in manila padders and made reshipping very easy. I'm glad the second level of defense saved you since the free "crushproof" boxes didn't do much!!   They do mellow out a bit Jim, give it a couple days. But the detail remains, tone gets a little thicker, or maybe tighter is a better word? I have no complaints even on the whites, they just sound awesome. Wish I had time to start breaking in the new ones and comparing. Maybe next week.

Whoa!  I replaced what I thought was a nice glass toslink cable between my SB3 and Tact pre with my new Grover digital IC and I was floored.   Immediately noticeable improvement... Edginess gone and replaced with a detailed yet relaxed musical presentation and definitely took my perception of what a Squeezebox can do up by several notches (this is one from John @ BS with his cryo/treatment mods).

Now, I don't fully understand how different digital cables effect sound - is it just jitter issues or more?  But whatever it is, thank you, Grover and Rich!

In a digital (coax) connection, the quality of the connector and almost more importantly, the quality of the connection from wire to connector can make a huge difference in sound.  SPDIF coax is particularly touchy with impedance issues.

Duke tried the Grover demo tour analog RCAs as digital interconnects between his DCs stack components. He did not hear any improvement over his pricier digital cables. I suggested he ask Grover if they are built differently than analogs, but I don't remember the answer. Glad to hear the grover digitals made a noticable improvement for you Mike. I can't wait to hear it. We have some DACs (Oracle, and new Scott Nixon) and super digital cables coming on Saturday, maybe bring it by if you decide to come?

You do know all digital cables sound the same, right? ;) 1's and zeros.....   hahaha

Sneaked in to the post office 15 min. before closing, picked up, and subsequently installed my two pairs of Grover ICs. For what it's worth, from what I'm hearing initially, there's definitely burn-in needed. (I note my previous ICs were coated with Walker SST, but I installed the Grovers sans SST. After the Grover's have about 100 hours on them, I'll get busy with the SST and listen to what differences are present.) So, seems I'll have to give the ICs some extended 24/7 time on the system before coming to any conclusions, which is not totally unexpected.

Many thanks again to Rich, Grover, and this forum for making the Group Buy a smooth adventure in trying something new. Peace, and Happy Listening.

Just got my Grovers today and they arrived in great shape. I like the grey look...much prefer that to white. Will get 'em hooked up tonight and report my initial impressions soon. BTW, these cables look very similar to my old Tekline I/C's I've been using since I sold my Reality I/C's. The Tekline actually had more detail and presence than the Realitys. Thanks for doing this, Rich.

Well, let me get to the point........these are wonderful cables!! I have been listening for a few hours and have been entranced in the music  :D/
The Grovers resolve beautifully. The midrange is rich and the treble is detailed, refined and non-fatiguing. The texture of the instruments is realistic and "organic". The presentation is forward..you have a front row seat. These IC's are a steal for the price. They are so good I have a new found respect for my CIA D200 amps. I won't forget to mention that IMHO, the foundation for this are the 3 Black Sand SRMK5 power cords I recently inserted in the system. The sound was deliciously good tonight and this is with my current Zalytron Aria 7 MTM speakers. I have my new SP Tech 2.1's sitting in the hall waiting for me to finish painting the unfinished stands.

My sincere thanks to Carl, Rich and Grover

I am planning to wrestle my Timepieces in the 100 degree heat into my car and take them over to Richidoo's G2G tonight.  I am interested to hear how they will sound in Rich's treated room with a higher-end music source (I still have a ways to go to get my S3 where I eventually want it).  Also, looking forward to hearing the Grover SC's versus other cables and to meeting Rich and the other local guys.  Of course I will be interested in their educated feedback on a pair of Timepieces with all of the lastest upgrades.

Great.....should be fun.... plus you get a workout moving and lifting...I know....did it many times....have a great time....and hope we get some photo's.

With almost two full days of 24/7 playing time on my two pairs of Grover ICs, I have to say it's pretty frickin' sick how good these ICs now sound in my system. I'm even putting off applying SST on these because I don't want to interrupt the musical flow. Grover, many thanks for a kick a@@ product!

djbnh-

Thanks for the comments.
Can you elaborate a bit?

I started a separate thread linked below and am anxious to hear impressions as they break in.
I have a pair from source to preamp and also from preamp to amp.
Mine were very smooth initially, then have become a bit edgy for a bit. I have about 36-40 hours on them.

My new Grover XLRs.  Let's see I started cooking on Friday last week and work will free up on Friday morning so that's about 168 hours.

Will that be about enough before I hear the first note?

FWIW
XLR will be used from the Lavry DA-10 dac to the Bel Canto EVO 4 running in bridged mode, then out through a combo of Sonoran Plateau and Luminous Synchestra Signature speaker cable to SP Tech 2.1s.

So are the new Grover XLRs also graphite colored?   The pair I have are the white with black termination wrap.   From my understanding, when Grover went to the white on white, he didn't change anything on the XLR ICs.   So, of course, it begs the question of whether the latest XLRs are any different in build or sonically... Anyone with insight on this?

And, fwiw, I have no complaints about the white & black pair I have.   They sound great and very much like the newer Grover graphite RCA ICs I just received.  Highly detailed and perhaps a bit forward but with great transparency and dynamics.

Lonewolf:

Current XLRs are a modest Wireworld design the Polaris 5s.

Dr. Connelly:

My XLRs are graphite, but I have no clue if they are an evolved design (from the other colors), sorry.

Dr. Connelly:

Ah... what respect!   The 'md' is really for Michael D., but you can call me Mike, or you can call me Michael or you can call me MickeyD, but ya don' have to call me Dr. Connelly.

So, Rich or Grover - is it possible to get an explanation of what changed from the white/black XLR ICs to the new graphite version?  Just cosmetic?

Grover should be back from his annual hiking vacation next week. This is a pic he took in Sierras on last years trip.

I have no clue about the XLRs. Sorry! I heard Steve's white ones at my house a month or two ago, they were really great.

Dr Connelly, I like the sound of that! hehe

Bixby-

Good info.
There is a separate thread FWIW in which folks have been giving some initial impressions over here:

http://www.audionervosa.com/index.php?topic=597.45 (http://www.audionervosa.com/index.php?topic=597.45)

What is your associated equipment?
Agree on the lower range-extraordinary.

Bixby,
If you you really want to keep things organized, you can just copy your review to a new post in the thread LKDog mentioned above... then add your associated gear as well if you'd like... You can delete the post here after that.. no problem either way.

I certainly don't want to fan the flames of your nervosa, but...  What am I saying?  It's payback time.

I thought all you Grover fans would be interested in what the new SC interconnects are like.  In a word:  Expressive.  OK, not very descriptive.   How about this instead:  Much quieter (silent background), more transparent (better micro detail), better bass (deeper, tighter and faster), midrange (more subtle and detailed but doesn't add sibilance) and HF (no noise/hash riding the signal).  Instruments have added body and weight.  Vocals are to die for.  This cable does tone, baby.

Frankly, if only the shielding has changed, I'm very surprised that it made this kind of difference.  This cable is much more nuanced.  Notes stop and start when they should.

The upgrade cost isn't much if you are looking for Grover's best.  Well worth it.  Burn-in took a while -- north of 100 hours in my system.  But worth the wait.  Never sounded bad but didn't sound balanced (midrange kinda stuck out).

Hope you give these a try.  Great stuff.  No commission was received for this public service announcement.

Ok, so does anybody have an address to send them to, and does anuybody know that the cost for a 1.5m cable is, and what forms of payment he takes?

I'd like to take advantage of this while my system is idle.

TIA,

Jim

Shep,

No, you want to tell him you want the silver-carbons.  The graphites were one version back from the current.  The new ones will have a black jacket.

I guess way back when, there were some black ones, and then the first group buy were the White series, and the second group buy was the next in the "white" series, but was actually in a graphite colored jacket.  The silver carbon is the latest, and the carbon here has to do with the shielding material, and is not related to the color "graphite".  This latest version -- also called SC, I believe -- has a black jacket and is more expensive -- $225 for a 1 meter single-ended pair.

So, latest is SC (for Silver Carbon), black jacket, $225 for 1 meter RCA cable.

Hope that helps.

I wrote Grover for comfirmation on whatever I'm getting. Sure will be better than the nothing I have!
I thought the original group-buy whites were damn good (system dependant?) so this gotta be the goods.

Shep,

I just wanted to confirm the info Jim conveyed (not that any is needed...).  The SC are definitely the latest version and different from the "S" graphite version.

(The S 'graphite' version was provided by Grover for the second group buy.)

As Jim noted, they appear to stand for "silver carbon", because Grover is using new & improved carbon-metal shielding.

Grover seems to have slowed his mod pace now that he perhaps has reached his goal of cable excellence at an extremely competitive price point.  And with his recent patent, I assume he has some business development activites underway.

Click on my gallery icon if you wish to see photos of the latest SC version.

Note: They sound amazing.  A significant step up from the previous S 'graphite" version.  Much blacker background, more audible sound sustain, more mid-range detail emerges due to the quieter background, very fast. Same strong clean bass and high end as before. They image fantastically well.  I anticipate you will be pleased, but reactions to Grover's cables have varied a bit depending on equipment configuration. The SC's (and previous S version) match well and sound great in my analog front end / all tube system.  I will be interested to read your comments.

Thanks BillC, your comments are very helpful.

When I compared the Grover White S directly to JPS SC3 ICs I was amazined at how close these $150 wires were to the $900 competition. In the end the JPS was only marginally better in the "quietness" area. SC3 didn't ring at all and so revealed subtler details in midrange, like emotion, delicacy, stuff like that, which you wouldn't otherwise even think about.  With your comments about SCs making up some ground in that black background area, Grover must be closing in on that level of performance. A little more expensive now with his SCs, but still only 25% of the cheapest of the best of the best. I too am looking forward to hearing them myself.

There was a white with black shrink, which went on tour, but I don't think it was called S. Then came White with white shrink, S. Then the graphites. Since Grover is willing to upgrade, it is a safe investment to ride the upgrades. By this time we know the mods have always been noticeable worthwhile improvements.   I hope he is able to scale up easily and get the word out. A lot of people will love these.
Rich
