Jacintha - Here's to Ben

One of the best late night listening albums I know...Smooth vocals, classic interpretation...Georgia...Somewhere Over the Rainbow...Stardust...Sweet...

One of my top of the pile discs as well. Not only is it very enjoyable musically, but it is a great test disc as well. Danny boy is one of my go-to cuts when evaluating equipment. This one has it all. Good bass line , nice vocals, a sax solo that shine a light on tonality and resolution in their respective frequency bands. And it is a small combo with very well defined instrument placement that instantly shows changes in sound-staging when equipment is swapped, tweaks are made or speaker placement is moved. I also find it very useful to listen to the echo return on the vocals. As I made positive changes to the system the echo sounded more and more like it was coming from a specific point in space as opposed to just somewhere in the back. All this and good music too. This one is a winner.

BTW I Don't know what format you  were listening to this on. I originally got this album on and XRCD pressing and thought thought that was great sounding .... until I got my hands on the 45RPM 180g 2 LP set, which just blew away any of the CD pressings I have heard.

Duke Ellington: Live at the Blue Note

Duke and his band captured live at the famous Blue Note club in Chicago on Aug 9th, 1959. Duke was a gret live performer, so from a content perspective this is a great album. The sound is OK with the exception of the ambient noise (glasses clinking, people talking a la "Jazz at the Pawnshop"). This gives you the perspective of sitting in the middle of the club as opposed to up front and close to the band. While this is a realistic portrayal of what it was like to see duke at one of these jazz clubs (where people came to eat drink and party while listening as opposed to sitting quietly in a concert hall during the performance) it can get a bit distracting to someone who is sitting in a mancave just listening to music.
