equipment stands
« on: February 22, 2018, 07:10:36 PM »
I’m in the market for equipment stands. Nothing fancy. MDF is fine. Need to look decent/good as they’ll be in the living room. Prefer $200 or less. Kit is ok as well.
Thanks,
Nick

I've been looking at the same stand. Looks like a great value. I know they also used to have some B-stock, cosmetically blemished VTI type racks a few years back. Good value.

I saw them at Capital Audio fest. Not the sturdiest stands at the show, but then again they cost less than you would pay in sales tax on lots of the other racks.

Tom,
I think they would work fine for me. The heaviest piece I have is a 65 lb amp and I may be replacing that anyway. The main discussion with my wife is what color can I have.....

They are speced at 66 lbs max per shelf and 200 lbs total for the rack.

65 lbs is cutting it close, but I would put the amp on the bottom shelf anyway. And if you do that and you see the shelf start to sag you can always put a block of wood under the middle of the shelf to provide more support, so I think you will be OK

Yes, it would be a bottom shelf placement. My McCormack amp will possibly be replaced by either of the Folsom amps if things work out.

Are we interested in price points or function ? If price point then the Pangea is a good choice. If a Pangea rack is purchased proper footers will be required. VEM, Herbies, etc.
So consider price of footers along with Pangea. The purpose of the stand is to tame vibration as well as holding the gear. They can get expensive.
Also note it is recommended to decouple rack from floor. Herbies products come to mind for that purpose. So in the end if you choose a rack designed to deal with vibration no footers required.
Check out Audiogon for used stands as well. Good luck.

I’m interested more in price point as I still haven’t bought speakers. Don’t have much interest in absolute vibration control etc, especially if very expensive.  I’m familiar with Herbies and Steve’s prices are very reasonable. I’ll be going from wall to wall carpeting to engineered flooring sometime this year. I also just found some info on Sanus stands and your suggestion about used on Agon is excellent

I ended up buying the Pangea stand from Audio Advisor and it’s been fine. As I’m trying to resurrect my vinyl (with great difficulty), I’d need a different stand with a wider top and the ability to hold the 70 lb turntable. I saw this at the Odyssey website

http://odysseyaudio.com/Odyssey-furniture.pdf

It’s interesting, but more than I’d like to spend. I’ve searched IKEA online looking for an mdf stand, but couldn’t find anything. More suggestions would be welcome.

When I've needed a wider base for a turntable than my stand, I've placed a maple cutting board on top and let it overlap a few inches.
24x18x1.75 at Amazon for about $100 or 24x18x2.25 for $130. Obviously, smaller is cheaper.   Overstock.com usually has better deals.

Hi all.
When in Montreal in 2020 in a small one bedroom apartment,
I will buy a TV (55''), a BluRay player and probably a receiver.
The furniture shown  is what I want to buy from IKEA
we (My wife and me) will decided which one fits best our living room size and furniture.
The black unit is because I could not find a white one on their website,
but I want white.
The speakers are floor standing units.
Those IKEA unit is what I want to pay,
I have no budget for 500$ + unitand I like the wide - lower unit
than the narrower and higher unit.

Note:
I have now on planet Vietnam in my listening room the same unit as the one in black
and it does the job and it's sturdy and rugged enough for what I use it for.
