New Electric Panel For Audio System
« on: September 02, 2017, 11:53:43 AM »
Should we have one 30A dedicated line to sub panel ? Should we have dedicated lines for each mono block amp. Should we have a 20A dedicated line for each component ?
What do the experts say ? Now using [4] dedicated lines. One for each mono block amp. One for each channel of preamp [ dual mono, use same outlet for amp ], one for digital, one for TT. [ 4] in total with three Ubers and one Digibuss.
Breakers magnetic or not ? 10ga wire to duplex outlet or 8ga?

I would prefer 15a breakers so I could run all the Romex grounds through a Schurter DENO. I would be interested in 45a worth for 3x 15a.

The reason for the DENO is to break ground loops and noise that increase by having such large distances between the equipment on the AC line system.

Obviously you cannot do that if you have amps that exceed 15a but that is rare. Transient differences between 15a and 20a breakers won't be seen because they don't trip the breakers.

For wire my first choice is JPS in wall. But if that is too spendy then VH-Audio has good romex that was cryod.

The Mapleshade sockets would allow DENO's to be stuffed into an electrical box with some electrical tape. But I really don't know if they are better than Furutech's awesome sockets.

20A circuits generally use 12 ga romex. I would check the outlets you are planning to use. Many 20A outlets will not accept 10 ga or larger wire, so you could be locked into 12 ga. Perhaps audiophile type outlets are more flexible on wire sizing given their target audience, but the time to check on that is before the romex is in the wall.

Just a thought, Are you allowed to run Romex in your house? At one point the NYC building codes mandated that all residential wiring be done using BX cable.  Not sure what the rules are today, but it is something that you might want to check out before you get started.

Also along those lines, I seem to remember reading or hearing somewhere that BX cable was preferable of Romex on a sound quality basis. I believe Jim Marks had his dedicated outlets wired with BX even though it is not required in Nassau County.
Remember, it's all about the music........

Helpful info Tom. I used 8ga Romex cryo treated by TWL. The Voodoo gold over copper receptacles can use 8ga. All lines are 20A [4] from sub panel. A huge advantage for the dual mono pre and amps. Sound is more open with greater impact.
I posted this question so the experts can offer opinions and recommendations for others. I'm done.

Jim not to let you down I contacted NASA to build a Tesla super conductor power source. Next time you see me I'll be glowing.

Well six weeks later the new wires, panel, breakers are now broken in. No more sonic changes evident. Received some Furutech GTX-DNCF[R] receptacles to check out. Using Voodoo gold over teyrilium [ iIneed spellcheck] copper now.
We shall see. Well we shall hear the difference.

Installed [4] dedicated 20A lines from a sub panel. Sub panel is about one foot away from main panel. I have mono blocks, dual mono preamp and two subs. Now one dedicated for each channel. All have an Uber except digital which uses Digibuss only right now. Each dedicated line uses 8ga deep cryo treated Romex.
Getting a much bigger and weightier presentation. More focused as well. Bass improved dramatically. Absolutely dead quite. No hums, buzzes nada.
