Title: August 3 @ richidoo's
Post by: richidoo on June 29, 2013, 03:39:33 PM
Please come to my G2G on Saturday, August 3rd!

Jazz and classical music listening will begin at 1PM. There will be no talking allowed until 3PM. After 3 the audiophile bullshitting may begin in earnest, so time your arrival according to your preferences. As always, bring some vinyl or files on flash that you would like to share. RCM available.

I might have the "Horn Free" boxes complete by then, but the speakers I am using now sound nice enough for partying.

New to my system since last year is the Samet i15 integrated amp, and the tuned up Clearaudio TT which is sounding very nice now.

I will need to borrow a CD spinner as mine croaked since last year.

OK, Who's in?!?!  :thumb:

Geez, Rich! I thought you were coming to my Syndrome/ Rave on August 3rd!

I know! I was bummed to see the conflict, I was imagining coming up there, as I always do. I sincerely hope I can make it sometime.

But being practical (I hate that,) I will have driven 3000 miles between now and then, and I'm not sure the old minivan or the old fart driver could do another 1200 miles inside a month!

The good thing is that part of that 3000 is seeing you in MD.  :thumb:  Can't wait!

I will try to attend.... have steroid and nerve blocking injections scheduled that week.... which are looking more and more likely I'm going to need to try as it's not getting much better anymore with just therapy.... the drugs are at least good stuff and mask the issue enough to start getting around more :) ... screwed up disks in your back are no fun :( .......

did finally temporarily clip and crimp together the crossover parts enough to play the Zephyrs, Rich....  best implementation of SEOS I've heard yet... which isn't saying a lot, I know... but these ones really aren't that bad, especially on the tube amps with the AMR DP-777 feeding them.... I pulled out a couple storage books of CDs that I hadn't played in years... it was likely a mistake, but Ryan loved going and swapping the CDs for me so I could spin disks for the first time in 10+ years it seems...  not sure how much of a mistake it was to let a 14 month old play with a $3K transport and put his hands on my disks.... but he loved being helpful so Daddy didn't have to struggle to get off the couch :)

I like the Eminence Definimax woofer much more than the Deltalite....  at lower volumes, even better than the AE TD12X as well....  I've got them tuned too low right now (26hz instead of high 30's... guess I have to cut the ports a bit) and the stock crossover parts are not ideal at all.... but Greg heard them yesterday and really liked them.... so proceeding forward with tweaking them to get them as good as I can before handing them off to him...

Hope you can make it Shane!

Thanks for the update. I'm glad Greg is happy with the sound so far. I'm sure you will corrupt his innocent newbie happiness soon enough.  ;)  Please invite him to the g2g if he is interested.

Alex Lok once said that kids make excellent remote volume controls, and he was right! Wives not so much.

I will be seeing Thievery Corporation at Red Rocks on Aug 3rd!  :D

Rich,

I can bring the Raysonic, if you want to be able to spin CD's.
Do you want me to bring anything else (cables, etc)??

Raysonic would be great Steve. Thank you sir! It will lend a certain elegance to the festivities... Can you bring cables for it too? Digi, RCA and PC? Thanks!!

Thanks Steve! If it's not too much trouble can you pack a 2250 also? We have some preamps visiting, and I only have Sol's integrated. And it's good to have a solid fallback amp just in case. Thanks! Some SE and BAL cables, and Vinyl!  :thumb:

Don't worry about catching a bug Ken, we will blindfold and ear plug you when you arrive.  :-P

Last week I removed 1ohm from the tweeter pad, now it's sounding too much, so I'm adding .5ohm pad back onto the tweeters today. Also hoping to hang the TT on the wall, if all goes to plan. The sand filled speaker stands make a good TT stand, but there is still a little vibes from footsteps getting through.

Menu is homemade Chili, Chicken&Veggie Soup and Cornbread.

Damn,  I wish I could be there.  I could use a taste of nervosa.  My house is in the midst of major remodeling -- mostly kitchen --but the listening room is now full of what use to be in the rooms being remodeled so serious listening ain't happnin 'round here.

Have fun and let me live vicariously through your comments and PICTURES!

Thank you for a fun evening and thank Julie for the great chili.  It was great seeing everyone and catching Audio Nervosa again.  Man, I realized I have missed it!

Have a fun filled Sunday and thanks again for having me over.

As always, thanks to Rich & family for letting us 'invade'.
It was unusual, in that there was only  a few pieces of equipment. Mostly listened to some music...with occasional BS thrown in.
I've stopped in a local wateringhole to listen to some live acoustic music.I will post a few pics when I get home.

Thanks for coming over guys. Fun meet, nice to do so much listening. Sol just left, keeping the tradition alive, it's not over til Sol leaves. Someone had to finish all those brownies!

We agreed that my DAC needs an output stage or something to make it fatter. I have been thinking that since I got more into vinyl. So Sol is helping me experiment with various options.

Special thanks to Steve for everything. Long drive, gear, wires, CDs, baking, tennis lesson, DJing, etc....

Thanks to Anand for bringing up some awesome vinyl. This one was a favorite, on 45RPM:
Also for bringing his Bent preamp, which sounded awesome, actually didn't sound at all, in a good way. I had wanted to hear one of those since even before Slagle version.

Thanks to Sol for rushing to finish the prototype of the i60. It sounded the best it has ever sounded, and dev. now supposedly finished. Congrats!

Thanks for the brownies Ken and Vera. Really glad you could make it!

Pictures!    :yay2:

The human is Sol. The machines are Butler 2250, Bent Preamp, Clearaudio TT, RaySonic 168 CDP, JPS everywhere. Sol also brought his i60 which won the amp wars. The Raysonic won the digital wars. The Bent stood alone, no takers.

Is that a newer version of Sol's i60? All I remember was a knob, switch and a led on the faceplate... or am I thinking of something else.

If it is new(ish), I was wondering what other enhancements Sol added along the way.

Dave

Sol's I-60 is still housed in the same box but as of Saturday Night he said it is now complete.  He is ready to offer it as a commercial product with different box and possible remote control.

Guys, I have heard this amp, with different tweaks, many times and it has always been very, very good.  Saturday night it was exceptional.  If he is able to offer the commercial version for the price he thinks he can it will be an incredible value.  An audiophile amp without the audiophile price.

He recently added a preamp stage, which allowed him to change the output stage to virtually eliminate any crossing distortion at full power. It is a class A soul in a class AB body. The detail is unbelievable, the bass is unbelievable, using output transistors that are famous for great sound but tricky to work with, he finally tamed them with his new feedback design. Treble is as natural as any tube amp, but cleaner. No trace of metallic treble overtones as with typical budget SS amps. Class D type, rock-hard bass with very low output impedance, but none of that class D bat repellent screech, because it's linear.  It has come a long way in 5 years since I first heard it.

I'm so sorry I couldn't be there.  I am quite interested in Sol's amp as well.  Since trading out my Aerial 10Ts for a pair of Von Schweikert VR-35s, the need for my high-powered McCormack DNA-500 is far less.  That and the fact that the DNA-500 is big and hot are reasons that I'm thinking it may be time to move on.

What's the final power specs on Sol's amp.  It seems like an early post indicated 60w/8ohm.   Is that still the case?  Not sure how that'll do on the Von Schweikerts (but I'll be Shane knows ;-)

We'll have to consult together to pick a date for the next one.

The i60 is 60W>8R, and 120W>4. That's Sol Watts, which means both channels driven, continuously. Peak power is higher and there is output protection circuit.

PCBs are under way for i15 and i60. But he might build a p2p version for you in the meantime. You have his email?

You can probably borrow the prototype to see if it fits.

Rich, my house is going through major remodeling so my nervosa is peaking with little way to satisfy.  I figure it'll be at least another month or more before I'm ready to give anything a serious listen but I'll be in touch and will track down Sol at that time.

It would be great to hear what it will do with the VR-35 speakers.  They're certainly more efficient than my Aerial 10Ts were but they seem to enjoy power to get moving.
