Title: The Monolith open baffle planar array
Post by: HAL on October 14, 2017, 10:48:28 AM
Now that GR-Research and the Parts-Express folks have the new Neo3 and Neo10 planar drivers again, back to The Monolith speaker design.

The baffle has the 45 degree wing, but needs felt to work correctly, so making the angle lower as Danny has suggested is the better way to go.  The future is going to work toward the 10 degree version with the GR-Neo3 and PE Neo10 planars.

The 3x8" OB H-Frames are built and next will be installing the drivers and connection to the Rythmik HX300 amps.

The dspMusikLCD will be the digital crossover and entire interface for the system to DC coupled amps the HX300 servo amps with balanced connections.

Picture is with the OB planars on two of the modular 2x12's for The Megaliths.  Both OB servo sub arrays work well with the planars as it is easy to change levels to each amp with the dspMusikLCD.

Looks cool Rich!

Is it one tweeter and one mid per side as pictured? Are these OB like the bass?

Honestly, I've always wondered why Danny hasn't done this in a kit??? It seems like such a no-brainer.

Rich,
Yes, one BG Neo3-PDR and Neo10 per side in a winged open baffle with 3x8" servo subs in an OB H-Frame.  Three way digital crossover.

Scott,
My understanding is it was to be a Serenity Acoustics design.  When the BG to Christie sale occurred, no one could get drivers. We all gave up when that happened.  I built prototypes with Danny, Ruben and Ben's help of a two piece design, but had to put it away thinking it would not happen again until Danny and PE got new BG drivers.

Now if someone wants to build baffles, I have a dspMusikLCD crossover for them.  If folks ask Danny now, he might do a kit with one of his passive crossovers that always sound great.   He now has the GR Neo3's available.

This was my prototype to try the BG drivers in an open baffle and that led to The Megaliths after hearing Danny's Line Force speakers with you.  I think the OB H-Frame will be better than the U-Frame I was using before.

Nice!

You got a CNC?

Do the new drivers sound and measure as good as the old ones?
Title: Re: The Monolith open baffle planar array
Post by: HAL on October 21, 2017, 02:13:41 PM
Rich,
No, but Ben who built these does.  That was probably 2 years ago before Christie Digital bought BG and stopped production until this year.

Measurements are next to see how things go.  I expect the GR Neo3 to be different, since it is no a PDR version as made, but the Neo10 should be the same as before.

Yes, going to install the yarn after the first set of measurements.

They are basically stock Neo3's at this point with the new diaphram material.

The planar mid and tweeter are wired and ready for testing. The 14awg polyolefin insulated wiring has been very easy to work with for the drivers.

Now to connect up to the Parasound A23 and see if we let out any magic smoke. If not, measurements.

Next is wiring up the two 3x8" servo sub arrays and HX300 amps.

Figured out how to make the measurements and be portable.

Time to break out the Parasound Zamp V.3 with Pocket CLIO and calibrated mic!  Very portable stereo amp with the capabilities needed.

Been windy today, so will try tomorrow morning after temp goes up.

Second test baffle with the original GR Neo3-PDR and BG Neo10 installed and wired for testing.

Pocket CLIO and Parasound Zamp V.3 with the calibrated mic should work well.  Just need the wind and weather to be better tomorrow.

Discovered something I had forgotten.

The tweeters in these baffles are BG Neo3-PDR's not the GR versions.  The pair of GR versions went to a person wanting to build another GR speaker system that needed those.

Weather looks good so will try another round of measurements today.  Found out the connection terminals on the Neo3-PDR were to close to the rivets and shorting out.  Dropped the tweeter level way down, so now insulation is on the rivets to stop that from happening.

Just got the msg that the second Parasound Halo A23 amp arrives today to power the Monolith planar system.  :)

The balanced input ChipAmps are getting setup for the Neo3 and Neo10 planars for trials.  Connectors for the HX300 servo amp on the way.

Have a suggestion for an improvement after the first set of measurements.  Will be trying that soon.

Now to get ready for CAF2017!  Not showing, so get to listen and hang out with friends! :)

The weather was good today, so did measurement tests with the moded GR Neo3 and new production BG Neo10 on my test baffle.

These were far field gated time measurements on tweeter center axis using Pocket CLIO and calibrated mic.

Now to build a digital crossover and see what happens.

Just to document the wiring scheme for the Rythmik HX300 servo amp wiring:

Wire with heat shrink is the driver coil connections to Speakon, 1- Yellow = -, and 1+ Black = +

Wire without heat shrink is the servo coil connections to Speakon, 2 - Yellow = -, and 2 + Black = +

Have the TRS to miniXLR cables ready to try with the dspMusikLCD.

Wiring to the 8 dspMusikLCD DAC's to the amp channels will be:

Outputs 1 = GR Neo3 tweeter, 3 = BG Neo10 midrange, 5 = GR servo sub are left channel connections (top TRS connectors)

Outputs 2 = GR Neo3 tweeter, 4 = BG Neo10 midrange, 6 = GR servo sub are right channel connections(bottom TRS connectors)

Outputs 7 left and 8 right are direct wired input to DAC channels for use with a headphone amp or extra subs if time delay is added.

If you need RCA connectors, then TRS to dual RCA connectors can be used and the right channel (red) output is the + polarity for each channel.

Starting the build of the two 2x12 modular H-Frame servo sub flatpack builds.

The shipping box contains parts for one 2x12 and extremely well packed to protect against shipping gorillas. The flat packs have all the parts and very well packed from Jay and Don. Just supply glue and clamps.

New bottle of Titebond III glue like I used on the 6x12's awhile back.

Unpacked and time to let the Medex come to room temperature before gluing.

The first set of GR-Research SW-12-16FR servo sub drivers are unboxed from the main box for the individual boxes for protection.

Wiring for the Rythmik Audio HX300 servo amps are done, Just have to wire the drivers to Speakon connectors..

What's the difference between monoliths and megaliths?

This 2 driver bass module goes with the monoliths, right?
Will the monolith tops go on top of it, or separate like megaliths?
Title: Re: The Monolith open baffle planar array
Post by: HAL on January 07, 2018, 11:56:28 AM
The Monoliths are the single GR Neo3 and BG Neo10 in an open baffle top that sits on the 2x12 servo subs.  Will post a picture of the prototype shortly.

The Megaliths are the open baffle planar/ribbon line arrays with the 6x12 servo subs.

Setup the new measurement system for the 2x12 servo subs using Room EQ Wizard driving the dspMusikLCD from my PC Netbook. This is very similar to me running it with the MS-3 Music Server.

REW's latest beta software added ASIO drivers running at 24bit/192KHz that work correctly with the dspMusikLCD.  Nice easy setup for the system.

Using the Earthworks M550 calibrated Omni and 1021 mic preamp for input to the dspMusikLCD.  Works very well with an extremely short impulse response for a measurement mic.

Tried a ground plane measurement with success and next some nearfield measurements to compare.

Rich,
Here is my prototype of The Monoliths.  The open baffle planar section will probably change, but good enough to start the full design.  They will be mirror image pairs.

Oh yeah, I remember those.

Boy the Neo10 is huge!  I don't know why I thought it was smaller, but never seen it in context like that your picture. That's what you need to get down to 200Hz.

What's the advantage of measuring with ground plane mic?
Title: Re: The Monolith open baffle planar array
Post by: HAL on January 07, 2018, 08:01:17 PM
For subs it minimized room effects on measurements.  Should really be a hard surface for the mic for it to work correctly.  That was to test the system was working and it is.

Did a nearfield measurement of the upper woofer to check and it works, so Room EQ Wizard at 24bit/192KHz will now be a standard install for dspMusikLCD systems on the MS-3.  Very simple measurement suite to help dial in a system using the same hardware as the crossover.

My HX300-8OB sub amps are off to Rythmik Audio to be moded to HX300-12OB for the 2x12 use.  The EQ for the open baffle changes significantly between the two size drivers.

Hope to have them back late Jan for use.

Have a pair of Parasound Halo A23 stereo amps ready for the open baffle planar top when the HX300-12OB amps arrive for a triamp setup with the dspMusikLCD digital crossover being used with the MS-3 for the entire system to run The Monoliths.  The A23's sound great with the line arrays, so going in this system for trials as well.

The dspMusikLCD will allow time alignment of the top baffle and sub drivers using time delay for the top to match the subs.  This allows both wavefronts to align correctly.

Still more news next week.   :D

Rich,
Regarding the time delay aspect, does the software make the adjustment automatically or do you do it manually?
What time frame would that usually be? Is this measured in milliseconds?
Nick

Nick,
There is a delay built in to offset the head sitting.on the sub.

It is a fraction of a millisecond.  Actually measured in time samples.  The resolution is 0.071" for.each time sample.  It can be modes when programmed, but at this time not user adjustable.  There is software in work for updates by the user.  That is tbd.

Waiting on the finish to be completed.

Congrats 👍

The modular servo subs and HX300 amp cabinets are finished and ready to get the drivers, amps and wiring installed.

Also got a nice front picture of the open baffle top before Jay packed them and now on the way.

Thanks Dave!

It was a team effort! :)

doug s, you should have heard the GTA room this year.  The two OB 6x12's were actually working correctly this time!  They fixed the problem they had last year.  I have the same OB 6x12's in my listening room that I built and now they sound the same.  They did not last year.

Those are the diffusors you sent me probably in 2009-2010 time frame.

Another show report from CAF2018 by TNT-Audio about the HAL demo room.  The info is about 1/2 way down the page.

Thanks to KLH007 for spotting it and sending the link.

The Monoliths system is setup in the new listening space.

Did measurements and updates based on them and the system sounds really good.   It is ready for demos.

PM me if interested.

Rich,

Your Monoliths were very good sounding at CAF, in spite of the crappy hotel environment you had to deal with.

I can imagine that hearing them set up in a proper acoustic space must be a real treat.  :thumb:

Hey Guys,  what is the purpose of the cross in the speaker baffle speaker cutouts on this mid 60s Harmony amp?  Does it act like a beam blocker or is it there for support? Just wondering.

One advantage of having a dspMusik crossover is that with speakers like The Monoliths, you can place the planar tops and servo subs in different positions in the room and use time delay to adjust for the distance offsets.

This way if you get better bass response with the subs in different positions than the planar mains, it can be compensated.
